Of Footprints, Fantasies and Forgetting

And so I went back there to stand
Where we had walked and talked that day
But the shadows in the sands
Of Time were strange, misshapen gray

The songs we listened to and danced
Like children on sweet summer’s shore
Seemed to have rendered their romance
To seasons and the ocean’s roar

And when I went back there tonight
In search of what we had that day
All I could find in the moonlight
Were footprints that had washed away

  2. Yes, sad and true, even if the moment lives in your memory, you cannot bring it back.
There's a poem by a Soviet-Russian poet I've been meaning to translate for a while; he's remembering his childhood, his father who was killed during the war, and he says, "Unfortunately, or fortunately, the truth is simple - never return to the old places..neither you, nor I will find what we search for."
    Love your poem, Janet.

  3. Thank-you V~ It was nostalgia, yes, but as Sasha commented, it was this exactly "never return to the old places..neither you, nor I will find what we search for." what inspired these words. Thank-you Sasha, and if ever you translate it I would love to read it!
