Ultimate Goal...Happy 20th Birthday, Matt

Soon time for all its trouble takes
Each share of joy or strife
And from collected echoes makes
The picture of a life

Where rise and fall of day to day
Not one hour repeats
Grace pours into the painter’s tray
Fresh faith-and-valor fetes

Where constant charge of Now and Here
Is like a gift from God
Love’s colours of both smile and tear
Anoints time’s temp’ral sod

…and instills a most solemn Urge
Within the human heart
As subtle-swift, a steadfast surge
Turns moments into art

Were Gallery of Days Gone By
Showcases Learn and Teach
As That and This soon fills the eye
With pictures out of reach

…and what once seemed like ‘nothing much’
Clad in modest veneer
Becomes, beneath bequeathed taste-touch
A legacy, my dear

Then seek with all your heart, the truth
Pursue integrity
Remember in your days of youth
He who made you and me

With humble mind, take daily stock
Of Time’s Ultimate Goal
Where common tick and tock of clock
Soon strips all but the soul

Dear Matt,
So thankful for the gift of you
that heaps the heart with joys
while soft and swift years turn into
What makes men out of boys

Lord, bless and guide and keep this man
Winnowed from boyish zeal
Lord, make him weak enough to stand
and strong enough to kneel

...and as the years unfold their due
 Of Unknown's breadth and length
Lord, help him learn to lean on you
For both wisdom and strength

Matt, so glad for the gift of you
For all that God has planned
I pray that you always cling to
 His kind, Unfailing Hand

Mom~

(also, SO thankful for all your friends, young men of integrity and truth!
I often pray for you all!)

Remember your Creator in the days of your youth,
before the days of trouble come and the years approach when you will say,
"I find no pleasure in them"--

Isaiah 33:6
And He will be the stability of your times,
A wealth of salvation, wisdom and knowledge;
The fear of the LORD is his treasure.

Ecclesiastes 10:2
A wise man's heart directs him toward the right,
but the foolish man's heart directs him toward the left.

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness,
and all these things will be given to you as well.

Ps.119:9
How can a young man keep his way pure?
By keeping it according to Your word.

Joy of Boy

Oh, what joy to be a boy
Carefree as the wind that sweeps
Through the woodland while he sleeps

Oh, what bliss sweet boyhood is
Laughter’s magnum opus rings
From sand-castle’s freckled kings

Oh, what worth fills boyish mirth
Treasure without greed or guile
Cheers the mother’s frazzled smile

Oh, what vim composes him
Ambling through blue dream-land’s lake
Leaving love-songs in his wake

World of lost socks, building blocks
Master Mischief's time-out sit
Makes us glad in spite of it

Oh, what joy is little boy
Grappling with life’s yes and no
Manhood’s predecessor, oh

We Love our Boys...

We love our boys.
Their noise,
Their toys,
Their vim,
Their grin,
A
Mother’s joys

Yes, we love our boys.
Be it
Mischief or
Mirth unfurled
A boy is surely
God’s smile
To the world

We love our boys.
…tomorrow’s men
And as those shoes
They don
I pray within them still
A little bit of boy
Lives on…

Of Things to Come

It’s happening; you’re leaving me
Time sheds its guarded subtlety
It fills the timbre of your voice
I must concede; I have no choice
You’re leaving me

The way you look into my eyes
Has cut denial down to size
Your thoughts have changed as well they should
Time loosens strings and it is good
You’re leaving me

You’re leaving me; I look ahead
With throbs of mingled joy and dread
I wonder what God has in store
As you advance toward the door
You’re leaving me

To bolt the door I would not do
Many before have passed on through
Childhood extols its dividend
As love and pride and longing blend
You’re leaving me

It is the way of life and time
The broadening of a nursery-rhyme
Years bare their single-minded plan
A boy must leave to be a man
You’re leaving me

Janet~

Lest week Matthew (our son) had a few buddies over. When one of them first spoke
I spun around and did a double-take. I had not seen him in a little while
And suddenly his voice was deeper. Today, from another room, I heard Matt talking and it hit me…it is happening to him too.
When…how?

Bad Boys.....

There’s no such thing as a bad boy
Oh, when they come into this world
They all are pure and precious
Red faces and little toes curled
But it seems that some are cheated
Out of things we need so much
And while everyone calls them bad boys
They’re crying for a loving touch

We all need to feel like we’re valued
Like we’re needed, with things to do
We all need a little patience
Some more than others, it’s true
We wouldn’t remove the mischief
Or even the naughtiness
They’re boys, and it is my belief
They’ll learn if given a chance

Some get cheated out of a mother’s arms
And dad never seems to be there
Some have never been told how much
They are loved just for who they are
There’s no such thing as a bad boy
But oh boy, it’s a bad world down here
And some of them learn it quickly because
They have no other choice, I fear
