Sum of Influence

My mother gave all of her siblings and children a 'book' binder for Christmas;
a story she has been writing for over a decade that began
the day she was born and shared in her words some of her life
up until her marriage to my dad!
As I read it I marveled over and over what a lovely, wonderful mother we had
long before she was a mother!
(this, I am sure was not her reason for writing the book)
this is my observation as she shares some of the memories
and lessons she documented over the years
and put in a book as a memento for future generations, to peek into the past
and help us appreciate the pieces of lives that have helped to shape our own!

My mom and dad were such faithful
(not perfect, but faithful) examples of faith
and the older we get the more we value the priceless gift
our childhoods were and the foundation they laid for our
own journeys of faith for this life.

Life can evoke a sense of sacred threads placed into our hands
that only by God's grace and through His Word
can we weave them into something of value
for future generations to cling to!

Our grandson turns four today!
The next generation is wasting no time in growing up too fast!
From this...

...to this in the twinkle of an eye

(and a few groans😉)
He is quite a character!!

How manifold the pieces of
what makes our life and shapes our love
How hidden are so many parts
of other people’s hopes and hearts
that ever-deftly intertwine
the tendrils of the family vine
to weave with circumstance and choice
the mentor of tomorrow’s voice
as influence unfolds its sum
in generations yet to come

To Read a Poem, Dear...

A few poems read and reread recently...

To read a poem, dear
Takes very little time
Like tids-and-bits of love and cheer
Proportioned into rhyme

It creates common ground
Where we of sundry walk
Are somewhat all together bound
By simple tick and tock

To read a little verse
Penned for thought’s benefit
Can turn intentions we rehearse
Into ‘just doing it’

…and helps us realize
In just a line or two
How literature in bite-size
Is quite easy to chew

A poem is a hug
Across the years and miles
To mediate their tender tug
With ink-anointed smiles

Where, though Time takes its toll
And proof of progress spreads
The elements of heart and soul
 Are spun with ancient threads

To read a poem, dear
(though some may think it strange)
Helps us to balance now and here
With things that never change

Rare Thread

"For My hand made all these things,
Thus all these things came into being," declares the LORD.
"But to this one I will look,
To him who is humble and contrite of spirit,
and who trembles at My word.…
Isa.66:1-2

Mankind is held, beheld, beloved
By One we cannot see
Save in the thousand-thousand ways
He grants glimpses for free

Beneath, above and all around
There’s no denying this
No matter where on earth we look
The God of Heaven IS

We, on God’s footstool, must admit
Nobody can detail
The oracle of instinct, save
By He who does not fail

The thread of Miracle is love
Before the world began
The Master of Time's essence wove
A most mirac'lous plan

Should it not make us tremble then
His miracles enthrall
We, held, beheld and beloved by
The Weaver of it all

Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow.
What is your life?
You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.
James 4:14 NIV

A cavalcade of seasons that no lariat can lasso
Where we are oft betaken by its green-gold-red-white hue

Where highs and lows of thorn and rose bestow both prick and prize
The wicked and the wonder-full entangled in our sighs

…where feather, knife, tickles and slices; rife with pleasure-pain
To we, a breed of need and greed, subject to sun and rain

…and lingering where giddy pink and bronze undo the day
Until the very ground beneath our feet is drawn away

…and tucked beneath the hierarchy of stars above a sphere
Where years, like moths and fireflies flit by and disappear

…where we are oft left breathless by the impact of tick-tock
And how that Door to yesterday no latchkey can unlock

…where Now is always caught between The Was and What Will Be
A vapor on the Very Brink of Vast Eternity

…where awesome separation betwixt living and the dead
Are held into existence by One Single Fragile Thread

 Psalm 39:5
"Behold, You have made my days as handbreadths,
And my lifetime as nothing in Your sight;
Surely every man at his best is a mere breath.
Selah.

We must pay closer attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away.
For if the message spoken by angels was binding, and every transgression and disobedience received its just punishment, how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation?

This salvation was first announced by the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard Him,
and was affirmed by God through signs, wonders, various miracles,
and gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to His will.

Of Threads, Thoughts and Things Past

The sky threads the river with silver-blue sheen
The sea threads its glimmer with gold
As spring threads its glory in garments of green
Over earth’s ebony hold

You thread my thought with the hint of a smile
You thread my heart with your sigh
And every so often in my midday mile
You thread a tear in my eye

The bloom threads the stem with petal-fragrance
As leaf-song and flower unfold
Spring threads the air with hope’s effervescence
Where hills become heaven’s threshold

You thread my memory with silver-soft touch
You thread the wish in my sigh
And every so often I miss you so much
You thread that tear in my eye
