Tomorrow, tomorrow
Oh, tomorrow
You say
But darling, all I ever get
Is today
I’ve reached into midnight
But it is no use
Tomorrow is merely
A phantom excuse
For as surely as I lunge
At the hem of its frock
It is mist on my tongue
At twelve o’clock
And all that is left
Of its vapor hooray
Is the brand new repeat
Of another today

How true! Reaching seems pointless! Great juggling with the todays.
oooh i love "vapor hoorays." and now i'm thinking about the downside of only getting todays. hmmm.
ReplyDeleteThis is a wonderful piece of poetry: self-contained and deeply layered. Fine thoughts within the original images.
ReplyDelete"but all I ever get is today"......oh so true. Love the leaping at the hem to the mist on the tongue.......this is a wonderful poem to read. One resonates with every line:)
ReplyDeleteOh that phantom our heart reaches for only to elude and make us live in the repetition of the same pain another day. Your poem is so moving..it puts into words what I have felt many times over the last year and a half.
ReplyDelete...and "I Got You Babe" on the clock radio?
ReplyDelete... "Oh, I believe in yesterday" is the lyric replaying in my mind that your poem inspired in me TODAY ...
ReplyDeleteTomorrow is merely

At the hem of its frock
It is mist on my tongue
At twelve o’clock
Love this in its entirety but especially this portion is so smooth. Well written,Janet and so nice to see you around the garden!!
I like this one even better than your first - this is new thinking.
ReplyDeleteI like this one a bit more, also. Feels like a dark walk. Promise as "a phantom excuse" is lovely and "mist on my tongue" as a tinge of hope, as I see it. Very nice! :)
ReplyDeleteYOU should be writing lyrics for music! WOW, this is beautiful and haunting~ I love both of yours
ReplyDeleteYour words are deeply appreciated, one and all! Thank-you.
ReplyDeleteThere really is no tomorrow, will be no tomorrow! Today, only today to be and live and love.
