Martha, Martha...

this song isn't considered a Christmas Carol but I wish it was!

Every year I resolve to have a Mary Christmas,
sitting at His feet, as it were, begging, tell me the story of Jesus
... then the phone rings; someone wants a recipe,

The fuel-man drops by trying to ease the blow on the pink slip
with a humorous Norman Rockwell calendar

and Jim is leaving and needs breakfast and supplies

and little girl is hungry for ' Baby Jesus birthday cookies, please'
...and I remember the laundry I started when I got up

...and the fire too, (now needing re-starting)
...as I hunt for a stapler to hang up a new card
...and try to remember where I was before the thing that is, was.
and I haven't even touched the to-do list!

...sometimes I think I feel someone tapping me on the shoulder in gentle reprimand
whispering, "Martha, Martha!"

38 As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. 39 She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. 40 But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”

41 “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, 42 but few things are needed—or indeed only one.[a] Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”

Oh! and this morning's first-day-of-winter sunrise was spectacular!
Thank-you, God, thank-you so much for myriad, breath-stealing beauty every single day!

At our house there is as much thought put into Christmas Eve menu as Christmas Day
Little finger-foody treats to look forward to after the Christmas Eve Service.
But always first we read the story of Jesus' birth out of the big, old Family Bible
(and then, for a few minutes I feel like Mary;-)

But to make that Eve and Christmas everything it has *traditionally been
*(because traditions make the 'remember how we always...)
It takes planning and prep!
So, this poem is in Martha's defense:)

...for, if I sit too long
in pastures green
by waters cool
Then who will feed
the hungry throngs
home from work
or after school
and all they wonder
there and now
is
'where's the chow?'

...sometimes I chide myself
My fuss and all
as I fret over
dipped peanut-butter balls
(when the chocolate won't melt
and it tastes stale!)
Inhale,
Exhale
...be still, fluttering heart
while I dream of rooms
and food that look
and taste
like a works of art

"Tell me the story of Jesus"
So on Christmas Eve
we sit
and turn to the pages that tell
of Heaven's marvelous gift
sent to earth
in Baby's birth
Wonder washes over us
in heavenly peace rare and sweet
Until someone breaks
the silence with
'What's to eat?'

It really is a Reason worthy of our best!
That's the thing to remember as we prioritize
and dust and polish:)

Hath Winter Then a Heart of Tenderness and Winter Returns (oldies revisited)

Happy First Day of Winter, Everyone!

Hath winter then a heart of tenderness
For landscapes clad in rags of brown and gray?
Where farewell and arrival coalesce
Winter spills forth as autumn slips away
She touches with redemption-tinted garb
The stricken aftermath of summer cheer
Her sugar-coated kisses soothe the yard
Where yesterday it suffered autumn’s tear
And where the wanton field lay naked, bare
She wreaths its frond and furrow with the gleam
Of diamonds fit to garnish angel’s hair
Tucking to earth the farmer’s finished dream
Granting a gilded respite to his care
Spilling from sky a snowflake-choir requiem
***
Tis right to entertain both joy and grief
This season; the portent of hope and fear
Where we embark anew, the shoal, the sheaf
Of garnered days melded to bygone year
Like gathered harvest, seed then deed is wrought
Preserved beyond the elements of time
Its echoes tune the pastures of our thought
Where longing and fulfillment toll their chime
And now a gracious sheath of purity
Embellishes the dull and stricken plain
A mother with compassion’s sympathy
Blankets the grim reminders of our pain
Drawing our eyes to present mystery
History sleeps; to linger there is vain
***
Hath winter then a heart of tenderness?
White snow covers a year of scarlet tears
The barren bough reaches for her caress
The heart reaches beyond past hurt and fears
To offerings of hope and happiness
Unblemished; yet again a gift of grace
Ignores our monuments of selfishness
Where we have scathed and scarred her virgin face
With sordid sins of foolish fantasies
Time’s vault will not exhume our leaps of woe
But gently leads us from these agonies
Across a threshold unmarred as fresh snow
Granting to us but this; our memories
To keep the good then let the remnant go

Winter wanders in
wearing a white bridal gown
earth carries her veil

Winter Poem for the Child in Us...

Reluctant, defeated, autumn succumbs
To winter’s purposed and powerful grip
Stealthily sleek, silver silencing numbs
The ends of our noses and fingertips
Harshly the wind rakes its talons of steel
Over the cusp of the leafy-fringed ponds
Somewhere up yonder it touches a wheel
Showering the earth with quadrillion diamonds
Winter ah, winter, the predisposed foe
Open your pockets and bring on the snow

Pull out your mittens and dust off your sled
Bundle your babies in jackets of fleece
Starry-eyed children with cheeks painted red
Shrieking and rolling in winter’s release
Frosty the snowman returns to his post
Corn pipe and blue scarf to ward off the chill
Miniature angels in unnumbered hosts
Cover the rooftop and valley and hill
Tumbling and twirling and spiraling down
Winter returns in her star-studded gown

Spring, summer, autumn, green, azure and gold
Planting and pruning and gathering in
Winter is white bringing with the sharp cold
A season of rest and of quieting
Gather your loved ones around the warm hearth
Kinder is love when the fretting winds blow
Winter is keeping the seed in the earth
Tucking its bed with a blanket of snow
Its days are as numbered as all other things
Winter; the glorious harbinger of spring

Not Too Late To Say I Love You....

I had begun another theme for today then this song was in my in-box this morning because
I subscribe to The Piano Guys channel...
Last year tragedy rocked the family of Piano Guys musician John Schmidt.

We all know someone who is missing someone this Christmas.
May this stir us to treasure life's loves still within reach!

Not too late to say I love you
Touch your face and kiss your cheek
Not too late to say I’m sorry
To find words we ought to speak
Love, life’s best blessing is waiting
To give someone’s heart a lift
This year, while we’re celebrating
Let’s make love our greatest gift

Walk the mile that makes us humble
Stop to listen while we may
Make a memory worth keeping
Who knows what fills morrow’s tray?
Hug each other, hold with wonder
We who need each other so
Thank the Creator of Heaven
For its glimpses here below

Darling, let’s not take for granted
What slips through our hearts and hands
Take a moment, be enchanted
By the music of the dance
Not too late to say I love you
Cherish cares that love will bring
For we never know for certain
When death changes everything

Emmanuel... God with us! (Relation, not Religion!)

Yesterday, all day it niggled at me...how to  encapsulate the Awesomeness
that salvation is so much more than a ticket to Heaven or exemption from hell!
(I felt like yesterday's post may have left that impression)
We don't just believe/receive and then we're left to fend for ourselves until we die and go to Heaven. Last night I listened to the sermon I missed (click link) the day before while teaching Sunday School.
He spoke on exactly,  exactly what I was trying to piece together in my thoughts/prayers.
Salvation is Emmanuel!
God with us!
God the Father sent Jesus His Son so when we believe we receive a Comforter, the Holy Spirit
Peace, a Wonderful Counselor,  a Friend, a Father, a comforter,
a sustain-er, healer, hope, guidance,Unwavering absolution(even when we doubt)
Emmanuel! God with us here on earth!
The part that makes it Relation, not religion!
Hallelujah!
Salvation is so much more than just a Heaven-pass!

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Isa.9:6

God sent His son into the World to bring hope, light and peace
Mankind, born into sin composes Mercy’s diocese
The need for one Pure Sacrifice to save this sin-cursed breed

…to void the law for blood of rams and bulls and goats to spill
Unable to accomplish what Jesus came to fulfill
The King of kings and Lord of lords, a Lamb for you and me

And hope for all; The Fall no longer dooms mankind because
God sent His Son, named Jesus, Immanuel, God with us

No grave could hold, no stone could barricade Emmanuel
The risen Lord abides and guides and whispers ‘it is well’
Though ages roll the God of ageless soul is undeterred
And all who seek will find Him, just as promised in His Word

The Joy Faith Fixes Eyes Upon...Inspired by a bunch of rambunctious little boys!

In Sunday School I teach a class of boys ages Gr.1-3. Above is the story of yesterday's lesson.
Why was Jesus born? I asked after story-time.
'To save us from our sins', came the prompt reply
(just as they were told during story-time when asked the same question)
But so what? I challenged them (having previously discussed that sin is all  bad stuff/disobedience)
Why does Jesus have to save us from our sins?
Why do we need a Saviour?
At first they were stumped then one volunteered 'so we can go to Heaven when we die!'
Yes! So we can go to Heaven when we die.
The shepherds believed even before they saw what the angels said.
We believe too even if we can't see. We call that faith!
So I pressed them further. "why is it so important that we believe?
If we miss Heaven, is that a big deal? What happens if we don't believe?"
There was silence for a little then one boy said
"I think you go somewhere else when you die or you're just dead".
'No', interjected another. 'you go in a lake of fire"
Yes! I said soberly. We do not like to think about it or talk about hell but that is the opposite of Heaven and that is what makes this Christmas story so, SO AWESOME
Jesus came to save us so we don't have to got to hell.
Sin dooms us unless we have a Saviour and that Saviour is Jesus!
That is why this is such an important and Wonder-full story to tell and know!
That is why Christmas is the best!
Jesus was born.
Our Savior!
Our way out of hell!
Our way into Heaven!

After everyone left one little boy who is quite new to our class stayed behind .
He said, I always liked Christmas because it's Christmas, you know?
but now that I know all about Jesus I like it even way, way more, you know?
then he dashed off.

So to all 'teachers and preachers' aka moms, dads, grandparents etc...
let's keep on telling the good News of Jesus
for it is His will that not one soul should perish!

The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness.
Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

The poem below can be read in singular stanzas as small poems
or as one whole!

The joy faith fixes eyes upon implores us to proceed
It beckons us to tell the world of soul’s salvation-need
How Christ-child in the manger is more than a tale to tell
He came to save us from our sins and thus save us from hell

How lovely are the feet of them that run to tell good news
How Jesus came to earth to be more than King of the Jews
The Saviour of the world came down to bear the penalty
That broke the curse of sin and sets the condemned sinner free

Repentance and belief; the crux of pardon’s benefit
For ‘whosoever will believe’ is God’s prerequisite
The evidence of faith is hid as yet until the toll

We all must choose and will, whether with intention or not
With final exhale we inherit then, what choice begot
Made while grace poured in mercy-streams unfettered, full and free
To save the soul from sin’s reward for all eternity

The Joy faith fixes eyes upon is more than star-dust, oh,
This blip of this and that will soon insist that we let go
Then, only then, will we behold, as if Time never was
The face of He who saves us by His grace, Jesus, Jesus

Tell me, does anybody know when their last breath will be?
Inhale, exhale, sacred affair with but one guarantee
That every eye will see Him; King of Kings and Lord of lords
As Belief or Rejection both receive their just rewards

Whoever comes to Him Jesus will never cast away
Ah, it is not for naught He came to Bethlehem, a babe
The crown of thorns, scourged, pierced with sword, the cross He bore alone

The prize faith fixes eyes upon not one of us can win
A Saviour unto us was born; God’s grace saves us from sin
A gift, unearned and undeserved by all who will receive
The promise of eternal life if only we believe

It is hard to condensed such an immense topic into a blog post:)

Here are some verses to help clarify the Beautiful Love of God

For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that everyone who believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him. Whoever believes in Him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is already condemned,
because he has not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.

And this is the verdict: The Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness more than light, because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come into the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. But whoever practices the truth comes into the Light, so that it may be clearly seen that what he has done has been accomplished in God.”
