It Would Be Easy To Despair...or Hope's Great Counterclaim

For today's prompt, write a pessimistic poem.
***
I shared the verse below on yesterday's post HERE
I am sharing it again today because it felt
like a divine reminder when I needed it most!

Psalm 116:13
I will lift up the cup of salvation
and call on the name of the Lord.
(read the whole glorious chapter HERE)

Sometimes I forget...
The cup of salvation and the name of the Lord
supply every need!
Hallelujah and thank-you, dear Savior!

Sometimes I forget, happiness in this world
is not the end goal!
(But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness;
 and all these things shall be added unto you-Matt.6:33)

(dear readers, not from this community.
I am mourning the loss of a neighbour and friend,
a mother to three children, very dear to my heart
and who still visit on a let's-go-for-a-walk-to-Janet-whim💓
bearing gifts of farm fresh eggs, cheese, fresh cookies, etc.
and always so much love.)

but through Christ, we have Hope's great counterclaim to despair!

Sharing a few recent YouTube uploads to cheer us on

It would be easy to despair
To be crushed beneath weight of care
Where the world at large has gone mad
Testing the quests that make us glad

It would be easy to lose sight
Of faith's position of delight
If we fixate on what we see
Of suffering's great misery

It would be easy to fall prey
To gloom and doom's cheerless dismay
It seems like Satan's bag of tricks
Has left a world no one can fix

It would be easy to believe
The one whose hate aims to deceive
To plant a seed of doubt, to lure
Us from God's promises secure

It would be easy to lose heart
As we watch the world fall apart
Because of the rejection of
God's Cornerstone of Truth and Love

It would be easy to give in
Crushed by consequences of sin
Without salvation's brimming cup
It would be easy to give up

...ah, here we find Hope's Deathless Rose
Salvation's cup still overflows
Redemption's flood still runs between
The part we see and the Unseen

For this is not the Destiny
This is The Joy that Waits To Be
Lift up your eyes, behold the Yet
That we are so prone to forget

Remember, God is good and kind
He opens eyes, otherwise blind
Do not lose heart, do not despair
Time, but the path we pave/brave with prayer

2 Pet. 1:3-4
His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness
through the knowledge of Him who called us by His owna glory and excellence.
  4Through these He has given us His precious and magnificent promises,
so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature,
 now that you have escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.

Matthew 5:11-12
Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you,
 and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake.
12 Rejoice and be exceedingly glad,
for great is your reward in heaven,
for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Ps.122:1
I was glad when they said to me,
“Let us go into the house of the LORD.”

John 15:9-11
As the Father has loved Me, so have I loved you.
Remain in My love.
10If you keep My commandments, you will remain in My love,
just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and remain in His love.
  11I have told you these things so that My joy may be in you
and your joy may be complete.

When I Am Tempted to Despair

on further restrictions
could truly cause Ontario-ans to despair...😭
God, make us more faithful in prayer🙏

Today's window-font is frost-crisp silver and gold gilt!
(we were only at -18 this morning so rather balmy compared to
temperatures out west of around -40!)

When I am tempted to despair
Beneath life’s weight of woe
Lord, let your power by faith’s prayer
Doubt’s conflict overthrow

Lead me in paths of righteousness
For your name’s sake, (not mine)
Rekindle utter thankfulness
For grace and love divine

Let wisdom be the wealth I seek
Your wonders never cease
Then let the thoughts I choose to speak
Reflect hope, joy and peace

Lord, let truth purify my prayer
Until your law is chief
When I am tempted to despair
Lord, help mine unbelief

Half-truths will set a deadly snare
Lord, purify my fear
When I am tempted to despair
Let me Your law revere

For thou wilt keep in perfect peace
The mind, kind-stayed on Thee
Your increase sires the decrease
That births humility

When I am tempted to despair
Beneath care’s dread design
Stir in me Gethsemane’s prayer
Lord, not my will but thine

And make my chief delight your law
Lord, purify my love
Until its most despairing flaw
Is ‘never quite enough’

When I am tempted to despair
Lord, purify my plea
With an image beyond compare
The cross of Calvary

The price of pride no lie can foil
With clanging flattery
How brutal is the bitter spoil
Of Self-first clarity

When I am tempted to despair
Lord, purify my goal
And lift my eyes beyond earth's care
To the home of the soul

It's easy to become disillusioned by what we see...
Oh, may it never be
we lose our way/faith
and are tempted to despair...

I had a craving to listen to this oldie this morning...

Lest we forget God's Sovereignty
(Click link above for full chapter)
Below a few excerpts...

Do not learn the ways of the nations
or be terrified by signs in the heavens,
though the nations are terrified by them.
3For the practices of the peoples are worthless;
they cut a tree out of the forest,
and a craftsman shapes it with his chisel.
4They adorn it with silver and gold;
they fasten it with hammer and nails
so it will not totter.
5Like a scarecrow in a cucumber field,
their idols cannot speak;
they must be carried
because they cannot walk.
Do not fear them;
they can do no harm
nor can they do any good.”

6No one is like you, Lord;
you are great,
and your name is mighty in power.
7Who should not fear you,
King of the nations?
This is your due.
Among all the wise leaders of the nations
and in all their kingdoms,
there is no one like you...

..the Lord is the true God;
he is the living God, the eternal King.
When he is angry, the earth trembles;
the nations cannot endure his wrath..

12But God made the earth by his power;
he founded the world by his wisdom
and stretched out the heavens by his understanding.
13When he thunders, the waters in the heavens roar;
he makes clouds rise from the ends of the earth.
He sends lightning with the rain
and brings out the wind from his storehouses...

23Lord, I know that people’s lives are not their own;
it is not for them to direct their steps.
24Discipline me, Lord, but only in due measure—
not in your anger,
or you will reduce me to nothing.

Defying Depths of Despair

Psalm 37:7-8
Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him;
Do not fret because of him who prospers in his way,
Because of the man who brings wicked schemes to pass.
8Cease from anger, and forsake wrath;
Do not fret—it only causes harm.

Often when I am tempted to despair
(and there seem to be SO many reasons these days )
 I think of Marilla Cuthbert's words to Anne,
"To despair is to turn your back on God"
Marilla Cuthbert, Anne of Green Gables

The depths of dark despair are always there, where we might stray
If we mistrust the care of He to whom we ought to pray

If we beg for deliverance but do not change our ways
If we gratify ignorance with flattery’s vain praise

If we do not obey the law that perfect love decreed
If we, not overcome with awe, do not find what we need

If we while knowing better still continue thus to err
And do not make an effort to be wiser than we were

If we, severely stubborn in our human-natured bent
Do not let goodness govern our intimate intent

We will be monsters, no matter how ‘normal’ the façade
If we do not acknowledge our lack and trust in God

If we, so broken at our best do not rest and rely
Without agendas, on the One who so loves you and I

If we do not yield heart and soul, to He who will provide
Our joy will never be made whole; we must be rid of pride

Or depths of dark despair will try to overtake the Light
If we do not first trust the Care that fits us for the fight
