Perfect Unity

We come together now
I, in anticipation
You, expressionless and brown

My heart races with expectation
I touch you reverently
With soft smiles of elation

You say nothing at all
But I am not distressed
As dreams and small seeds fall

In you I bury my little sorrows
As hope takes root
For brighter tomorrows

We come together now
In quiet understanding
I plant; you grow

You; my earthly heaven
Palace made of dirt
Such is my garden

The Beauty of the Lord

I know the beauty of our Lord
By all His wondrous works out-poured
The intricate and rare design
Of blue-bell, rose and columbine
The leaf that bursts from wooded bud
The shower that spawns an emerald flood
As out across each hill and plain
The muddy dross is green again
The bird returning to its nest
No map to point it east or west
The earth no more a dormant plot
As daisy and for-get-not
Clothe the wood-lot and the dell
Where yesterday the snowflakes fell
As hope and flower blooms anew
In spring-time’s sun-kissed avenue
I know the beauty of the Lord
As seed springs from a soil restored
Where thankful gardeners hug the sod
And the handiwork of God

This was inspired by starting the lawn-mower.
It is now officially spring!
We are still waiting for
The ‘roses, blue-bells, columbines’
But the first almost full day of sun after two weeks of
Rain and cloud causes one to reflect on the beauty of spring…
…even if it is still FREEZING!

What's in a Name?

As the syllables and letters which form our names
Roll off another tongue
What do you suppose is the foremost thing
That makes this name our own?
Is the name they speak synonymous
With kindness and contentment?
Or is its tone more ominous?
A harsh and sad resentment

If one should speak our name today
Would its resonance
Warm them in a tender way
And cause their thoughts to dance?
Or would it like a weight of steel
Press heavy on their frame?
I wonder how most people feel
When they hear my name…

Drifter

The wind roams the landscape
The gale roams the sea
And you roam the passages
Inside of me

Men strive and climb
Toward destiny
You mark out time
Inside of me

Longing is naught
But errant vagrancy
Pursuing a thought
Inside of me

Chastise the moments
That spread like the sea
Gathering oceans
Inside of me

A remnant of whispers
And willow trees
Play out in flickers
Inside of me

Fleeting

Nothing can stay
The green of spring will soon obey
The law of nature’s ceaseless hand
As gold and bronze reclaim the land
And summer’s fairer day

Nothing can last
Though we may strive to hold it fast
The face that brims with dreams and youth
Too soon must recognize life’s truth
How quickly comes the past

Nothing remains
To yearn is but to live in chains
So taste this moment ripe with chance
Hold it lightly in your dance
It will not pass again

Nothing can stay
The echo of a fairer day
May return in reverie
Or in a love-worn memory
As whispers slip away

Slumber

I cannot stay awake tonight
To pen the words I long to write
So I will hold you close to me
In sweeter strains of poetry

The perfect line eludes me now
Though I can hear the night-winds blow
It's inspiration falls awry
Unwoven strands swept to the sky

The pen slips softly from my grasp
I turn to slumber in your clasp
As love and loss slip over me
In unrequited poetry

Wish

Why do we hurry so through life?
Soldiers of its woe and strife
Rushing here and everywhere
Never with an hour to spare
How I wish for just one day
To stroll through fields of fresh-mown hay
To spend its fortune ‘neath the sun
Without the thought of things undone
Elusive gift; an idle hour
To stop awhile and smell the flower
‘Ere it bends its lovely head
And all its fragrant tears are shed
I wish to take your hand in mine
Where blossoms whisper on a vine
And we would have no care at all
But just to watch the petals fall
As daylight melts into deep blue
Stealing the sun-kissed avenue
Where music of a wanton breeze
Drips from honey-suckle leaves
And still unhurried we remain
For life is not a ball and chain…

In Love With You

I am in love with you
There is nothing I can do
To suppress my wild desire
As you whisper and inspire

I am in love with you
Completely taken, through and through
I cannot resist the urge
As paper, pen and passion merge

I am in love with you
Do with me what you must do
For you leave me speechless; stirred
You; the potent written word
