Of Courage, College and Carrying On...

We speak to them of courage and we hope within its speech
We find the very thing that we are striving thus to teach
Life’s laughter and lament, love’s learning-curves amalgamate
Within the eye; hello-good-bye; time never bars its gate

As daughters become us and we stare long at our skin
And wonder who we are; the image not the girl within
Where dying ways that life inflicts upon our gaze reflects
The nature of all nature and the climax of all flesh

Our lips, once filled with answers suddenly are dumb and numb
While merry moment-dancers seem to disregard the sum
Of all that they become as we peruse their aftermath
Where tragedy and triumph meld in glimmers on dusk’s path

Still, onward, ever onward, we commence again, again
The learning is not over until God declares, Amen
And so we speak of courage and we hope within its speech
To find the very thing that we are striving thus to teach

Our pastor, Dale Ward, encouraged students to take this verse with them as they return to school...
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go." Joshua 1:9

From Tennyson's Tears, Idle Tears...

Tears, idle tears, I know not what they mean,
Tears from the depth of some divine despair
Rise in the heart, and gather in the eyes,
In looking on the happy autumn-fields,
And thinking of the days that are no more...

Two-for-two Tuesday Tango with a Tempest

PAD challenge say 8: Two-for-two Tues.Write a violence poem. Write a peace poem

When you touch me you do not come in peace
Trembling I sense your demands; raging fire
Of need, expectation, passion; you release
The will of your want to my nervous desire
You do not care for my well-designed phrase
You are a hunter for virgin surprise
Scorning the whisper of weathered clichés
Spitting at fraudulent, fainthearted guise

‘Come to me. Leave me. Oh no, stay I pray,
I cannot bear to live without the storm
Of you ever splayed in relentless blue-gray
Tearing the cloth from my well-guarded form’
Tug-of-war tango, you teach me to dance
Willing the courage of word to my lips
Stripping the raiment of pride and pretense
From me with deft, impatient fingertips

Eager and fearful, I follow your lead
Blushing, yet begging we battle the air
Raw, potent tempest-tide rushes, recedes
Until we lie on noon's banks, naked, bare
Panting; the duel of courage and dread
Spent as a summer-storm; then only then
Tender and gentle you cradle my head
Placing in my bleeding fingers…a pen

Easy Street

It would have been easy
To let despair steal
The rest of the dream not taken
It’s hard sometimes
To know what is real
And where we are sadly mistaken

It would have been easy
To let doubt creep in
Subtle as night on the roses
And miss the sound
Of a door opening
As another behind us closes

It would have been easy
To let defeat fall
Not daring to challenge its candor
It would have been easy
To do nothing at all
But look back and forever wonder...

A Rich Reward

It takes courage to write the words
That perhaps we would never say
It takes courage to love when it hurts
It even takes courage to pray
It takes courage to rise above
The force that begs our retreat
It takes courage to stay and prove
We will not accept defeat

It takes courage to say ‘I was wrong’
It takes courage to make it right
It takes courage to remain strong
In temptation's dangling delight
It takes courage to stick to the truth
When it would be easier to lie
It takes courage to say hello
But more courage to whisper ‘good-bye’

It takes courage to be a man
It takes courage to be yourself
It takes courage to take a stand
Instead of following every one else
It takes courage to do our best
It takes courage to trust the Lord
But if we do we will be blessed
For courage yields a rich reward
