On Learning Love's Darling Price

Last week love's privileges and duties pressed to the forefront
so much so that poetry needed to take a quiet break.
Part of me softly mourned the loss of a sister who checked in most days
to see what was happening on my 'porch' and on a week like last week,
most surely she would send a text. something like 'is everything okay? missing your posts'.
At church on Sunday morning a friend mentioned that it was a quiet week on my blog??
and I told her why and also how special her checking in was.💝🙏
Later another friend also encouraged me, not to fret about writing,
but to be content when time does not permit!
It means a lot when someone cares about what is going on in our little worlds, doesn't it?!
A reminder for me to look around to see who I could/should be checking in on.

Whatever our 'little worlds' hold, of good or ill,
true joy and peace begin with surrender to God
who loved us so much He gave His only begotten Son,
 that whosoever believes in Him
will not perish but have everlasting life.
 John 3:16

On Sat. night when I returned home
a loving friend had left a thoughtful gift at my door!
Thoughtfulness and kindness are gifts
money cannot buy, but sometimes
money purchases very touching and precious mementos
like this....

Here's to a new day of learning love's darling price...

True love is like a priceless gift we need to give to find
Love's Greatest Gift, God gave to save the souls of humankind
To give us an example we should learn/yearn to imitate
To teach us how we ought to love before it is too late

My sad record of failure would/should unfurl a ghastly noose
But God, because He gave His Son, has cut death's lariat loose
He gave His Word so we may know the truth that sets us free
To love Him first and then each other with humility

Ah, pity all who look for love but cannot find its key
Who sift the dust of this world for love's immortality
Rather than reaching for the Gift only God can provide
Then finding in love's giving love's longing is satisfied

Ah, pray we endeavor to be at love's high beck and call
Because God, who so loves us gave Himself for one and all
To equip us with what/Who we need to learn love's darling price
How giving due glory to God yields living sacrifice

John 13:34-35
A new commandment I give you: Love one another.
As I have loved you, so you also must love one another.
/ By this everyone will know that you are My disciples,
 if you love one another.”

1 John 4:7-11
Beloved, let us love one another, because love comes from God.
Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God.
/ Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.
/ This is how God’s love was revealed among us:
God sent His one and only Son into the world,
so that we might live through Him. ...

Philippians 2:3-4
Do nothing out of selfish ambition or empty pride,
but in humility consider others more important than yourselves. /
Each of you should look not only to your own interests,
but also to the interests of others.

Regarding Life's 'Musts'

Today's post was inspired, in part,  by a comment Jim (my husband, a truck driver)
made this morning, as he envisioned another week
of snowy roads, winter driving etc...
Not in disrespect to my 'I will pray for you'
he simply stated the matter of fact/must;
'all your prayers don't take away the fact that I
still have to face the weather and the highway...'
What a picture of life for all of us!!!
and what a comfort of love!
When we pray for each other, 'for God to guide and keep'
the prayer does not take away the 'road ahead'
  but suddenly, gloriously
a miraculous transformation takes place!

We go from this...

to this!!
(oops!! I missed a word in the reference below but
drawing is way too challenging for me to attempt a do-over 😂😐)
also, a glimpse at what happens when I look at the clock and g-a-a-a-asp!
“I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee”;

Life's storms come, and pass
just as one 'must' precedes another!

No matter what we say to someone
we cannot take their 'Must' away.
(Jesus, in Gethsemane, though he pleaded was not spared)
We cannot travel their stretch of highway,
we cannot carry their cross.
We can walk alongside each other and
encourage each other, but we cannot
do each other's 'must'.
How wonderful then, the holy opportunity
free to all, to ask God to help us,
to hold our hand and to go before us.
We don't have to face life's 'musts' alone!
Oh think about this;
We alone, are responsible for our fellowship with our
Heavenly Father; surely the most sacred 'must' of all.
May we pray, as Jesus in Gethsemane prayed , 'not my will, but Thine!'
Or in the Lord's Prayer, 'Thy will be done'.

Isa.45:2-3 & 5-8
“I will go before you
and level the mountains;
I will break down the gates of bronze
and cut through the bars of iron.
3I will give you the treasures of darkness
and the riches hidden in secret places,
so that you may know that I am the LORD,
the God of Israel, who calls you by name...

5I am the LORD, and there is no other;
there is no God but Me.
I will equip you for battle,
though you have not known Me,
6so that all may know,
from where the sun rises to where it sets,
that there is none but Me;
I am the LORD, and there is no other.
7I form the light and create the darkness;
I bring prosperity and create calamity.
I, the LORD, do all these things.
8Drip down, O heavens, from above,
and let the skies pour down righteousness.
Let the earth open up that salvation may sprout
and righteousness spring up with it;
I, the LORD, have created it.

Life's burdens must be borne
Its highways must be trod
Its holy unknowns must be faced
Either fear or faith-shod

Its mornings must be met
Its tests must be endured
Its tempests must be weathered, pray
Hope's Anchor is secured

Life's deserts must be crossed
Its hurdles must be leapt
Its battles must be won or lost
Promises must be kept

Its choices must be made
Its voices must be heard
Its sorrows must be suffered, for
Love's due is undeterred

Life's lessons must be learned
Through much-mistake accrued
Its crown of wisdom must be earned
Humble pie must be chewed

And each of us must choose
How we will heed life's call
Whether we will trust or refuse
The God who loves us all

Life's burdens must be borne
Its highways must be trod
Its unknowns, betwixt morn-to-morn
Never too hard for God

Being a transport truck driver in the winter
is not for the faint of heart!
Will you pray for their safety and encouragement too?

Isa.45:21-22

...There is no other God but Me,

a righteous God and Savior;

there is none but Me.

22Turn to Me and be saved,

all the ends of the earth;

for I am God,

and there is no other.

Lyrics-Songwriters: Thomas Mosie Lister

… In the dark of the midnight have I oft hid my face
While the storms howl above me, and there's no hiding place
'Mid the crash of the thunder, precious Lord, hear my cry
Keep me safe 'til the storm passes by
… 'Til the storm passes over, 'til the thunder sounds no more
'Til the clouds roll forever from the sky
Hold me fast, let me stand in the hollow of Thy hand
Keep me safe 'til the storm passes by
… Many times Satan whispered, "There is no need to try
For there's no end of sorrow, there's no hope by and by"
But I know Thou art with me, and tomorrow I'll rise
Where the storms never darken the skies
… 'Til the storm passes over, 'til the thunder sounds no more
'Til the clouds roll forever from the sky
Hold me fast, let me stand in the hollow of Thy hand
Keep me safe 'til the storm passes by

Dear Lucy, I'm Learning Things I Thought I Knew...

Lucy and I loved this song

I'm sending it out to her family, and mine, from both of us.
I remember her telling me she wants to share this song with her children
till it drives them crazy 😅...and I said, 'me too!'

We chose to interpret this song as God singing to His children

One of the blogs I subscribe to is Barnstorming, click HERE
after Lucy suggested to me a number of years ago 'that she thinks I would love it'.
And I do!
OH, one of things that has left a gargantuan hole in my life
are our sister-soulmate loves and being able to share them with each other.
How I miss the unexpected surprises of 'you would love this, Janet!
and visa-versa.
How often I still whisper' you would love this, Lucy'
though I know she is in a place of unimaginable wonder and beauty
in the presence of our Beloved Savior-King forever!

On today's post HERE, about grief,
the author, Emily Gibson, shares some words of timeless wisdom;
'We don’t have control over the amount of time,
but we do have control over how extensively
our love for others is heard and spread.'

And those words inspired today's poem...

Dear Lucy
I'm learning things I thought I knew before the sudden loss of you
Before I understood how tears can mark days turned to months then years
After what I now realize I thought I did, but didn't, prize
Of time I thought we had until you donned wings to where Time stands still

I thought that you and I would weather the 'joys' of growing old together
Where I would blaze a trail and find you following, not far behind
And in its grin-groan-grunting art we'd keep each other young at heart
I never thought I'd turn to see only frames, where you used to be

I'm learning, as I vainly rue the things no wishing can undo
To take each opportunity that comes without time's guarantee
To wear love's second-mile-grade shoes as if I had no time to lose
And not to be unduly vexed, but love/live as if I could be next

I'm learning to revere love's role as I advance toward the goal
(where none of use can see how far from its eternity we are)
But all of us should take to heart the privilege to do our part
To consider our fellowman and love each other while we can

I'm learning to fully embrace the gift of looking, face-to-face
Of cherishing both high and low of holding on and letting go
And never minding quite so much the humour of Father Time's touch
As I learn what I thought I knew, dear Lucy, before missing you

Janet💔

Years ago, the chorus to the song below was a prayer
Lucy and I shared...to live till our children are grown, if God wills!
God willed her/our prayer to be answered.

And this, straight from the Word of God...
Jer.31:3
“I have loved you with an everlasting love;
I have drawn you with unfailing kindness.

From a Flower-Frilled/Filled Lesson Book

Ps.65:9-13

You [c]visit the earth and water it,
You greatly enrich it;
The river of God is full of water;
You provide their grain,
For so You have prepared it.
10 You water its ridges abundantly,
You settle its furrows;
You make it soft with showers,
You bless its growth.

11 You crown the year with Your goodness,
And Your paths drip with abundance.
12 They drop on the pastures of the wilderness,
And the little hills rejoice on every side.
13 The pastures are clothed with flocks;
The valleys also are covered with grain;
They shout for joy, they also sing.

Gardening and life are a fine-tuned medley
of deep disappointment and darling delight!

***
Today's post is a medley of garden photos and quotes...
and a poem inspired by garden-blessings...

Long after final fruit is plucked
And cobs are shucked and gourds are gleaned
And herbs are hung to dry on rungs
Indoors, and the last leaf is weaned

Long after flower-stems are stripped
And fronds are clipped and furrows turned
I will reflect, time and again
On garden-lessons I have learned

...of disappointment and delight
For such is life; wonder and woe
Laughter, lament, beauty and blight
Patience, (for plants take time to grow)

…learning, that love is worth the years
Of work, of Waiting‘s by-and-by
That gladness grows sweeter through tears
Perfection, more than meets the eye

That it takes both the sun and rain
To make Growing Things flourish, oh
That life mingles pleasure and pain
Into love’s vintage afterglow

...that without the wise purpose of
The careful, cruel pruning knife
The plant will not be strong enough
To bear the waiting weight of life

Long after kale's last curl is culled
And frost, its temp’ring touch has wrought
I will remain humbly thankful
For lessons that my garden taught

...not in some, brick-walled lecture hall
But in a sun and breeze-kissed nook
Where crickets cheep and petals fall
From a flower-frilled lesson-book

A Page from the Lesson Book( in the School of Life)

Hello!
First of all, I am going refer to the previous post,
because you might be wondering if I got carried away
by a couple of renegade bats and a mouse,
due to a longer than normal quietness here, but no!
those bats were caught on Thursday night after much more shrieking drama
and a husband who came back from a road trip just in time to be the valiant hero of the hour.
The bats were deposited outdoors before we left early on Friday morning
for a little holiday to Lancaster Pa. and Niagara Falls.
We returned home on Monday afternoon
to find the mouse trap also lived up to its charge,
so here's hoping to a critter-trespassing-free week!!

On Friday I turned 58! I can hardly believe it and I am thankful
for God's grace, goodness and mercies in every year of my
continuing education in the School of Life💖
So often it seems what I once thought I learned I need to relearn
So this poem is about what I am learning rather than what I have learned...
(I'm sorry this poem was a bit like a runaway team of horses;
I had to chase after it and rein it in)
In my defense, this is almost five day's worth of pent-up poem release 😅
after admiring many horses 💖💖

A few shots from the weekend...

I'm learning, it is futile/foolish to lament the haste of Time
That every day we should embrace as 'living in our prime'
I'm learning, regret and repentance are not the same thing
To live to love is manifold and all encompassing
How the lens that we look through affects thought, then word and deed
As moments toll/roll toward a goal for deathless soul decreed
That every day is holy ground, with so much to amaze
That happiness is found as we extinguish Want with praise
That hope without an Anchor is not really hope at all
That no matter how we progress, pride still fathers The Fall

I'm learning love must be learned, and learned best when very young
That much is built or torn down by the timbre of the tongue
That grief can carve a chasm only faith in God can cheer
That to exchange His Word for mine earns Consequence severe
That the enthralling thrill of the Splash swiftly disappears
But the ripple effect of it can outlast years and years
That our words are sweeter if we taste before we bite
That licking frosting from beaters is an ageless delight
That we cannot do everything to help our fellowman
But we can all so something, and we should, the best we can

That no one is too rich or poor to desire 'a good turn'
That we never outlive the class of 'still so much to learn'
That we will surely spoil the child if we withhold love's 'rod'
That flowers are a universal love language from God
That kindness and compassion prove the love that never fails
That laughter is good medicine for anything that ails
That though Mother Nature and Father Time will have their say
We are not at their mercy, but God's mercy, new each day
And though, as time goes by, we mourn the good of Good Old Days
God's everlasting and unchanging goodness naught can faze

I'm learning truth speaks for itself; a Voice none dethrone
That the noise of rebellion cannot shift The Cornerstone
That with each generation, nothing will stay quite the same
Save this, Jesus; salvation exists through no other Name
(though some have become bold enough to boast another way
Behooving all who still believe in Him to pray and pray)
I'm learning that in spite of so much to be sad about
God overflows creation with much to be glad about
And kindness is still like a little miracle of joy
And one of life's best gifts is still a little girl or boy

And life is like a cookie; we should savor every crumb
And Choice is like a Door always hinged to what will become
And though a good book can be good company for a while
A good book never can replace a warm handshake or smile
That Older Age reserves surprises we would never trade
For prettier disguises that will pitilessly fade
I'm learning how to touch and taste brief sparkles from Time's Fount
While all the while revering that for which I'll give account
And how a number cannot keep us from kicking up heels
That the fountain of youth is not in how one looks, but feels 💖

I'm learning how the common task is not common at all
That duty is a beautiful, breathtaking bestowal
That it is a rich blessing to be busy with demands
Lest we give place to the devil with idle mind or hands
That we get out of life what we put in, no more, no less
That the antidote to discouragement is thankfulness
That it is no cliché; God grants much to be thankful for
"God, forgive me for the fathom of mercies I ignore'
I'm learning that to number days with wisdom's gain and love
However old or young we are will always be enough

I'm learning how kind and cruel unblinded love can be
How the sting I despise often refines humility
And how these lessons equip love with a gentler reply
When in a situation when we don't see eye to eye
I'm learning in the tug of hugs as heartstrings strain and ache
No distance is quite far enough to cause heartstrings to break
I'm learning not to fret the 'druthers' while pushing the plow
That, though all dreams do not come true, the birds still sing, and how
I'm learning, bit by bit, and prayer by prayer's imperfect plea
How holy is each lifetime's blip before Eternity

...how season over season tunes ruthless relinquishments
How reason cannot reason away harvest-recompense
How we grow too soon old and too late smart; ah, sacred sigh
That unfolds the umbrella of daybreak's marmalade sky
I'm learning that a slice of buttered bread is luxury
And what and who we love the most is very plain to see
And that a garden nook is pleasure at its simple best
And that a winding brook can satisfy the Poet's quest
And that it is no use to try to slow the haste of time
But rather snare wisps of thin air to tame into a rhyme

1 Tim.6:6-16

Godliness with Contentment

6Of course, godliness with contentment is great gain.
7For we brought nothing into the world, sob we cannot carry anything out of it.
8But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with these.
9Those who want to be rich, however, fall into temptation
and become ensnared by many foolish and harmful desires
that plunge them into ruin and destruction.
10For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil.
By craving it, some have wandered away from the faith
and pierced themselves with many sorrows.

Fight the Good Fight

11But you, O man of God, flee from these things
and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, perseverance, and gentleness.
12Fight the good fight of the faith.
Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called
when you made the good confession before many witnesses.

13I charge you in the presence of God, who gives life to all things,
and of Christ Jesus, who made the good confession
in His testimony before Pontius Pilate:
14Keep this commandment without stain or reproach
until the appearance of our Lord Jesus Christ,
15which the blessed and only Sovereign One—
the King of kings and Lord of lords—
will bring about in His own time.
16He alone is immortal and dwells in unapproachable light.
No one has ever seen Him, nor can anyone see Him.
To Him be honor and eternal dominion!
 Amen.

Never Too Young (or old) To Learn

Sweetheart helping/learning to make butter tarts!

I generally am treated to 100% sweetness by this little gal
but 'rumor' has it there's another side that sometimes isn't quite so!😂😅🙏

Sometimes, when 'training up' children, an extra-firm hand is required;
A hand that let's them know that no tantrum will change the expectation for obedience!
It is vital that a child learns as early as able,
to recognize and respect/obey authority!

Sometimes, we as God's children need that firm Hand too.
How easily we (like children) are prone to ignore
and disrespect/disobey His Supreme Authority!
We, like little children, can be as sweet as pie (or butter tarts) when all goes well!
But what about those other times, when wills clash?!

Romans 6:16
Do you not know that when you offer yourselves as obedient slaves,
you are slaves to the one you obey,
whether you are slaves to sin leading to death,
or to obedience leading to righteousness?

The quest to please ourselves, it seems, comes very naturally
Rousing a wrestling match between Self and authority
We are not born to want to yield to edicts not our own
The master of our lives revealed by what our deeds make known

The quest to please ourselves is something that is never taught
Human nature is always king over empires of thought
The living proof of love’s touchstone demonstrates without fail
Who resides on the heart’s veiled throne; choice, its own tattle-tale

The quest to please ourselves is not uncommon or bizarre
Until we yield our will to God, love is a tug-of-war
Until we love Him first, we will not find true joy because
The quest to please ourselves is cursed with the worst part of us (sin)

We all have faced the giant in the valley of love tried
We all have been defiant, self-reliant, blind with pride
But, pray, we all have borne the blow that brought us to our knees
And slew the masquerading foe, impossible to please

And pray our quests have been condensed till only One prevails
Treasured with humble confidence/reverence in God who never fails
And pray that when we are beguiled to prize some lesser goal
He reminds us, we are His child; the Saviour of the Soul

© Janet Martin

Eph.3:20-21
Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly
above all that we ask or think,
according to the power that works in us,
to Him be glory in the church
by Christ Jesus to all generations,
 forever and ever.
Amen.

so, here's to that universal classroom of
'never too old to learn' or to forgive, or repent,
and confess our sins and try-try-again!

Below, an inspiring excerpt from the life story of
George Mueller of Bristow...

Of Learning Curves and Growing Pains

'Live and learn' has become
an oft-repeated mantra in my life!
Fumbles and stumbles to teach me
what I thought I already knew/learned...
On the bright side, it keeps life from becoming predictable, doesn't it?!
And often reminds us of the loving-kindness and patience of God!

On the cusp of Dusk-dimmed vistas waits a whole new ‘live and learn’...

Due to the lack of sunshine in the past month in southern Ontario,
when it suddenly made a late-day appearance
I couldn't resist putting supper-prep on pause and dashing out to the fields
behind my neighbor's barn!
Sub-zero temps made recording challenging because I couldn't be without mittens
for more than 30 seconds! But the chill added to the exhilaration!!

No one is like you, Lord;
you are great,
and your name is mighty in power.

Then, just like that it's morning once more...
a gray one, dappled with colorful birds...(pics below)

Daylight drives afar the darkness of the heavens; mercy reigns
Once again, we face the grace of learning curves and growing pains
For Time never fully severs us from ties of ‘no return’
On the cusp of Dusk-dimmed vistas waits a whole new ‘live and learn’

Soft, dawn’s lofty lintels flower, filling bowers with Today
Pray God’s armor thwarts the charmer bent on luring us astray
Pray the fight twixt wrong and right draws us to He whose love/truth sustains
He who knows the highs and lows of learning curves and growing pains

No matter how high on ladders of success, Faith plants its prayer
Always still, another hill to climb, another hurt/cross to bear
Sudden swerve on Learning’s Curve, or fresh onslaught of Growing’s pain
And Day’s Light to pierce night’s Darkness and God’s mercy, new again

© Janet Martin

So, here's to a new day of living and learning
to be kinder, humbler, holier, not on our own
but through Christ in us!

Ephesians 3:16
I ask that out of the riches of His glory
He may strengthen you with power through His Spirit in your inner being,

Philippians 4:13
I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength

and as mentioned, bird pics!
