The Good Lord Knows What Yet Remains...

Dear Lord, give us ears to hear You today
And hearts that desire to trust and obey
And hands that are busy and feet that are shod
With the readiness of Your gospel, oh God
Amen

Galatians 5:16
So I say, walk by the Spirit,
and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.

Happy June morning to you ๐Ÿ’—

The Good Lord knows what yet remains
Of unplumbed more or less
Beyond man’s gaze His grace sustains
His timeless promises

Then, fitted with His perfect law
(summed up in one word; love)
Today’s invitation to awe
Is like a treasure trove

That overflows with thoughts and ways
Beyond our wildest ken
Creation’s vault thunders with praise
Wonder replies, ‘amen’

Then what have we to fear? But this;
Of dire consequence
To look God in the eye and miss
His glorious evidence

The Good Lord knows what yet remains
With truth and righteousness
His perfect providence sustains
His timeless promises

Colossians 3:12
Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved,
clothe yourselves with hearts of compassion,
kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.

Wonder replies, ‘amen’ '

A Page from the Lesson Book( in the School of Life)

Hello!
First of all, I am going refer to the previous post,
because you might be wondering if I got carried away
by a couple of renegade bats and a mouse,
due to a longer than normal quietness here, but no!
those bats were caught on Thursday night after much more shrieking drama
and a husband who came back from a road trip just in time to be the valiant hero of the hour.
The bats were deposited outdoors before we left early on Friday morning
for a little holiday to Lancaster Pa. and Niagara Falls.
We returned home on Monday afternoon
to find the mouse trap also lived up to its charge,
so here's hoping to a critter-trespassing-free week!!

On Friday I turned 58! I can hardly believe it and I am thankful
for God's grace, goodness and mercies in every year of my
continuing education in the School of Life๐Ÿ’–
So often it seems what I once thought I learned I need to relearn
So this poem is about what I am learning rather than what I have learned...
(I'm sorry this poem was a bit like a runaway team of horses;
I had to chase after it and rein it in)
In my defense, this is almost five day's worth of pent-up poem release ๐Ÿ˜…
after admiring many horses ๐Ÿ’–๐Ÿ’–

A few shots from the weekend...

I'm learning, it is futile/foolish to lament the haste of Time
That every day we should embrace as 'living in our prime'
I'm learning, regret and repentance are not the same thing
To live to love is manifold and all encompassing
How the lens that we look through affects thought, then word and deed
As moments toll/roll toward a goal for deathless soul decreed
That every day is holy ground, with so much to amaze
That happiness is found as we extinguish Want with praise
That hope without an Anchor is not really hope at all
That no matter how we progress, pride still fathers The Fall

I'm learning love must be learned, and learned best when very young
That much is built or torn down by the timbre of the tongue
That grief can carve a chasm only faith in God can cheer
That to exchange His Word for mine earns Consequence severe
That the enthralling thrill of the Splash swiftly disappears
But the ripple effect of it can outlast years and years
That our words are sweeter if we taste before we bite
That licking frosting from beaters is an ageless delight
That we cannot do everything to help our fellowman
But we can all so something, and we should, the best we can

That no one is too rich or poor to desire 'a good turn'
That we never outlive the class of 'still so much to learn'
That we will surely spoil the child if we withhold love's 'rod'
That flowers are a universal love language from God
That kindness and compassion prove the love that never fails
That laughter is good medicine for anything that ails
That though Mother Nature and Father Time will have their say
We are not at their mercy, but God's mercy, new each day
And though, as time goes by, we mourn the good of Good Old Days
God's everlasting and unchanging goodness naught can faze

I'm learning truth speaks for itself; a Voice none dethrone
That the noise of rebellion cannot shift The Cornerstone
That with each generation, nothing will stay quite the same
Save this, Jesus; salvation exists through no other Name
(though some have become bold enough to boast another way
Behooving all who still believe in Him to pray and pray)
I'm learning that in spite of so much to be sad about
God overflows creation with much to be glad about
And kindness is still like a little miracle of joy
And one of life's best gifts is still a little girl or boy

And life is like a cookie; we should savor every crumb
And Choice is like a Door always hinged to what will become
And though a good book can be good company for a while
A good book never can replace a warm handshake or smile
That Older Age reserves surprises we would never trade
For prettier disguises that will pitilessly fade
I'm learning how to touch and taste brief sparkles from Time's Fount
While all the while revering that for which I'll give account
And how a number cannot keep us from kicking up heels
That the fountain of youth is not in how one looks, but feels ๐Ÿ’–

I'm learning how the common task is not common at all
That duty is a beautiful, breathtaking bestowal
That it is a rich blessing to be busy with demands
Lest we give place to the devil with idle mind or hands
That we get out of life what we put in, no more, no less
That the antidote to discouragement is thankfulness
That it is no clichรฉ; God grants much to be thankful for
"God, forgive me for the fathom of mercies I ignore'
I'm learning that to number days with wisdom's gain and love
However old or young we are will always be enough

I'm learning how kind and cruel unblinded love can be
How the sting I despise often refines humility
And how these lessons equip love with a gentler reply
When in a situation when we don't see eye to eye
I'm learning in the tug of hugs as heartstrings strain and ache
No distance is quite far enough to cause heartstrings to break
I'm learning not to fret the 'druthers' while pushing the plow
That, though all dreams do not come true, the birds still sing, and how
I'm learning, bit by bit, and prayer by prayer's imperfect plea
How holy is each lifetime's blip before Eternity

...how season over season tunes ruthless relinquishments
How reason cannot reason away harvest-recompense
How we grow too soon old and too late smart; ah, sacred sigh
That unfolds the umbrella of daybreak's marmalade sky
I'm learning that a slice of buttered bread is luxury
And what and who we love the most is very plain to see
And that a garden nook is pleasure at its simple best
And that a winding brook can satisfy the Poet's quest
And that it is no use to try to slow the haste of time
But rather snare wisps of thin air to tame into a rhyme

1 Tim.6:6-16

Godliness with Contentment

6Of course, godliness with contentment is great gain.
7For we brought nothing into the world, sob we cannot carry anything out of it.
8But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with these.
9Those who want to be rich, however, fall into temptation
and become ensnared by many foolish and harmful desires
that plunge them into ruin and destruction.
10For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil.
By craving it, some have wandered away from the faith
and pierced themselves with many sorrows.

Fight the Good Fight

11But you, O man of God, flee from these things
and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, perseverance, and gentleness.
12Fight the good fight of the faith.
Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called
when you made the good confession before many witnesses.

13I charge you in the presence of God, who gives life to all things,
and of Christ Jesus, who made the good confession
in His testimony before Pontius Pilate:
14Keep this commandment without stain or reproach
until the appearance of our Lord Jesus Christ,
15which the blessed and only Sovereign One—
the King of kings and Lord of lords—
will bring about in His own time.
16He alone is immortal and dwells in unapproachable light.
No one has ever seen Him, nor can anyone see Him.
To Him be honor and eternal dominion!
 Amen.

There's Almost Always Something...

I'm recovering from a night of being up from 2-5 trying to get 2 bats out of the house.
I'm hoping one flew out after I turned the lights back out
and opened a few windows and the front door, and waited...
but I am sure the other one (if not both๐Ÿ˜ญ) is still in the house!
I finally went back to bed with my bedroom light on and the covers over my head!
I wished I could have slept with the doors and windows open
but I didn't want to host anymore unwelcome visitors!!

So this morning's groggy prayer included a plea for bat-finding mercies ๐Ÿ˜“ ugh!!
I am so jumpy at every little rustle.
Yesterday, as I opened the potholder drawer, a mouse fled.
Ants turn up in the most random places right now!!
Small troubles on the grand scale of Trouble but unnerving nonetheless!!

This poem was inspired (in small part) by the above mentioned things...

There's almost always something to keep courage on its toes
To remind us by whose bestowal is each breath-sized lease
To keep us more attuned to He whose kindness overflows
Who orders sight-prone footsteps into paths of faith's increase

There's almost always something to subject our plans to change
To keep us more reliant on the Shepherd of our souls
Whose goodness and mercy often sees fit to rearrange
Quick creature-confidence with that which only He controls

To teach us to live with awareness of  'if the Lord wills'
We will do this or that, go here or there'; all by His grace
To contradict the Charmer with the Armor He instills
To equip us for battles, seen and unseen, that we face

There's almost always something to startle perspective, oh
There's almost always something to humble the prayers we plead
There's almost always something to revise 'wise reason', so
We learn to lean on He who knows exactly what we need

There's always still a bright side; it is God, who loves us so
No trouble is too hard for He who never leads astray
Greater is He in us than He who is in the world, so
By His power, grace, strength and will, He fits us for Today

Janet Martin

James 4:15
Instead, you ought to say, “If the Lord is willing, we will live and do this or that.”

Ah, Glorious Beginnings

if you're still looking for plants (or puppies?)
check out this stunning greenhouse and kennels!

A little promo to fulfill a promise to an old acquaintance ๐Ÿ’–

Don't you love life's beginnings;
buds, babies/tots,
 spring and summer mornings?!!

...the blip before time's telling tales
of blooms, birthdays and betrothals
bearing us breath by breath toward life's twilight?!!

ah, glorious beginnings
so lovely to behold
a bursting bud, a baby
a sunrise, blush and gold

ah, garden, freshly planted
harboring renewed hope
ah, young love, dream enchanted
before life replies 'nope'

ah, verdant June showcasing
green-gleaming countryside
ah, jubilant joy gracing
a beaming groom and bride

ah, glorious beginnings
before Time takes its toll
Before the crucial endings
that prove the heart and soul

Ah beauty, stooped and weathered
Duty and battle-taught
Ah, holy harvest gathered
(the planting long forgot)

Ah, glorious survival
No wishing can pretend
surpassing every rival
with 'faithful to the end'

1 Cor.2:24-25
Do you not know that in a race all the runners run,
but only one receives the prize?
Run in such a way as to take the prize.
25Everyone who competes in the games trains with strict discipline.
They do it for a crown that is perishable,
but we do it for a crown that is imperishable.

Measure of Mortality...

May and June are months for us, that include many milestone celebrations,
reminding us to cherish each other while we may,
and trust the Hands that measure out our
mortality...before immortality!

1 Cor.15:54
When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable,
 and the mortal with immortality,
then the saying that is written will come true:
“Death has been swallowed up in victory.”

I LOVE misty, minty-green June mornings
a-dazzle with dewdrops!

Our measure of mortality
Our sum of numbered days
Are not ordered by you or me
But by God's perfect ways

The author of each life ordains
Its beginning and end
The sacred part between remains
That for which we contend

Not for our own merit or worth
But by the grace of He
Who made the heavens and the earth
Who fashioned you and me

…and measures our mortality
With love beyond our ken
Whose thoughts and ways are trustworthy
Forevermore. Amen

Fleet measure of mortality
Frail veil of breath between
The entrance to eternity
And the part that is seen

© Janet Martin

2 Cor.4:18
So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen,
since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

Rom.11:33-36
Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God
! How unsearchable are His judgments and His ways past finding out!

34 “For who has known the mind of the Lord?
Or who has become His counselor?”
35 “Or who has first given to Him
And it shall be repaid to him?”

36 For of Him and through Him and to Him are all things,
to whom be glory forever.
 Amen.

Love, Far More Than It Appears...

Jim and I are celebrating 36 years of wedded bliss today!
Some days more blissful than others, for such is love and life...

It may appear quite commonplace; The love between husband and wife
As, for better or worse, we face/brace and share the highs and lows of life
Where workaday and give-and-take and find-a-way to get along
Is not always a piece of cake to keep love patient, kind and strong

Love, as it weathers smiles and tears of ‘what God joins till death doth part’
Is always more than it appears, and never for the faint of heart
For no matter how old or young or very much in love we are
Sometimes we do not bite our tongue, sometimes diff’ring opinions spar

Love is life’s very complex Best; so bitter-sweet, so wonder-full,
So rife with changes bound to test perspective with its push and pull
But, pray we tenderly revere Now-and-Here’s opportunity
For no one knows how far or near till farewell’s somber certainty

How graciously God’s goodness grants fresh chances as we live and learn
For every single circumstance love guarantees a rich return
And, though it may look commonplace, love is far more than it appears
It is a gift that, by God’s grace, grows dearer with the passing years

Heart throb, heartbreak; the stakes of love are very sacred and severe
The pinnacle of perfect joy and tender trove of grief-borne tear
Where we can never tell what waits to try the waning ties that bind
Around God's fingers as the days and years softly, surely unwind

How often, unexpectedly, Death reaches in to claim its prey
How often then, more reverently we vow to treasure every day
And cherish the familiar face of still-present husband or wife
And prize what appears commonplace, but is the very best of life

A wedding anniversary is never commonplace, my dear
It is the evidence that 'we' have weathered one more God-lent year
It is a celebration of the highs and lows love has withstood
Not by ourselves, but by the love of God who is faithful and good

© Janet Martin

Yes, Love often appears quite commonplace... whether it's
Hubby's hearty swig from Wife's morning coffee
(because its the perfect temperature!)
or,
Hubby's 'toss his hat whither-so-ever it lands' except the hooks inside the door,
quite indifferent to Wife's 'evil eye' ๐Ÿ˜›๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜…

...and SO many things that Wife does and drives Husband batty,
Long stories, too many bunny trails, ๐Ÿ˜…
(but I've wondered why he cares when it clearly seems he often
isn't listening in the first place) ๐Ÿ˜‚

Always poetry waiting to be written...

Forgetting to pay bills on time...OOPS!!
Ain't love grand?!!

7‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother
and be united to his wife,c
8and the two will become one flesh.’d
So they are no longer two, but one flesh.
9Therefore what God has joined together,
let man not separate.”

IT Is What IT Is...

We enjoyed celebrating Jim's 60th birthday yesterday...

Sometimes we say ‘IT is what IT is’
With morose resignation
As if IT held no promises
Worthy of celebration

As if IT didn’t burst from buds
In petal-wild profusion
Or drench June worlds in purple floods
Of wild phlox absolution

As if IT did not overflow
With mercies, new each morning
Or leave a Light in the window
For a loved one returning

Or bake a birthday cake or pie
Or scatter summer showers
Like silver laughter from the sky
To quench the thirst of flowers

Or weave, where winsome echoes waft
Fair scenes, love fondly misses
Or, for each hard knock, a sweet, soft
Memento warm with kisses

Or, strew in the blue wake of years
Grace, green with spring’s caressing
As if IT did not dry our tears
And cheer us with fresh blessing

As if IT didn’t steal our breath
With thankful exclamation
Because God made a way so death
Is no vague destination

As if IT offered nothing more
Than doleful growing-older
No picnics, gardens or seashore
No  friend-to-lean-on shoulder

As if ‘ IT is what IT is’ was
A sorry state of guesses
Rather than love’s thundering applause
For all IT’s happiness-es

Rather than Time's unsullied page
When a new day is breaking
As if IT did not set the stage
For memories-in-the-making

Our grandchildren were SO excited to give him their
silly cards so we could all laugh ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ’

A fantastic cover of Alan Jackson's song

The Older I Get ๐Ÿ’“

Ps.71:8-9

My mouth is filled with Your praise
and with Your splendor all day long.

9Do not discard me in my old age;
do not forsake me when my strength fails.
