What The World Knows Nothing Of...

Sometimes the sorrow for those who do not believe, love and obey God
is almost more than I can bear,
and lest misunderstood, I come across as having all the answers
and everything 'right', far from it!!
but the one/only answer I have right, is by the grace of God
through the cross of Jesus Christ;
Gal.6:14
May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ,
through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.

Fear, in this fallen world seeks to usurp faith, hope and trust
Without God’s Word to undergird, to guide, rebuke and cheer
How could we bear love’s cross of care or suffer what we must
But for the glory waiting in the Aftermath of here

Where the foothills of Heaven groan with sin, sorrow and strife
Where we, but brief sojourners because earth is but a vale
Need He who rolled away the stone from a tomb filled with Life
The life that will abide; even in death it will not fail

Ah, raise thy gaze above the worldly ways of wanton will
Cling to the sickle of God’s Word to keep thy conscience pure
And drink from the wellspring where Living Waters spill and spill
To sustain and refresh the soul committed to endure

…and tremble at His Word; pray for a spirit, poor, contrite
So, God will look on us and fill us with riches untold;
Green pastures and still waters to restore the soul’s delight
His perfect peace, his joy to be our strength, worth more than gold

Pray for this fallen world, mired in cesspools of despair
Ah pray for those who do not know the goodness of God’s love
That they may come to know He who laid mercy’s coffers bare
Upon the cross to offer what the world knows nothing of

By God's grace alone we are saved; a gift so none can boast
Shall we then continue in sin so His grace may abound
Shall we mock, as it were the One who gave His Uttermost
Oh, may it never be, when once lost, we are found

Surely, goodness and mercy will follow us all our days
Until we dwell with Him by whose resurrection, we live
Where we will never weary of perfecting worship's praise
As we look on Him whom we pierced, and He replied 'forgive'

John 11:25-26
Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life.
Whoever believes in Me will live, even though he dies.
26And everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die.
 Do you believe this?”

Isa.66:2
Has not my hand made all these things,
and so they came into being?” declares the LORD.
“These are the ones I look on with favor:
those who are humble and contrite in spirit,
and who tremble at my word.

For Athletes (in Life's Race)

Living in a culture bombarded with sensationalism and a buffet of distractions,
can subtly infiltrate our best intentions.
On more than one occasion the small group I am part of from our local church
ponders what living faithfully looks like...it always ultimately comes back to,
not what we do, but Who we do what for.
The gift of salvation is free but comes with a cost;
to be a living sacrifice!

Rom.12:1
Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters,
in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice,
holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.

Matt.6:33
But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness,
and all these things shall be added to you.

The prizes we pursue are subtly immersed
In what we think and say and do, then hence, who we seek first
For all the poise of words the voice of Choice transcends
The noise of speech, and undergirds what wordless proof defends

To keep perspective true and not fooled by fine lies
Begins with the important Who we put first in our lives
We need no script, well-versed, no proficient prowess
To humbly seek God’s kingdom first; to seek His righteousness

What better way to start the Unknown of Today
Than, with a yielded seeker’s heart, come what-so-ever-may
Then, as we strive toward tomorrow, pray we find
A dearer drive to love the Lord with heart, soul, strength and mind

We, athletes in life's race, are not judged for our speed
We trip and fall and all need God's patient grace to proceed
But step by step, faith smiles where once more, morning dawns
For, step-by-step turns into miles, and miles to marathons

Until the finish line is crossed; the race complete
(to win this race at all cost is each life's most solemn fete)
To be faithful and true, with every gifted breath
To Jesus who loved/loves me and you, obedient to death

God, rich in mercy grants redemption for our sins
And with each morning a fresh chance to run as one who wins
Greater is He in us, than all the world times ten
Then pray that we, through Jesus, shine as lights for Him. Amen.

© Janet Martin

1 Cor.9:24-27
Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize?
Run in such a way that you may [i]obtain it.
25And everyone who competes for the prize [j]is temperate in all things.
Now they do it to obtain a perishable crown, but we for an imperishable crown.
26Therefore I run thus: not with uncertainty.
Thus I fight: not as one who beats the air.
27But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest,
when I have preached to others,
I myself should become disqualified.

Divine Intervention

The Creator of all we marvel at is our Divine Intervener/Interceder! Hallelujah!

And bind my mind and spirit in chains where doubt and fear rue
And leave me floundering in bogs of misery, guilt-wrought
But for the lifeline of God’s promises, faithful and true (Heb.10:23)

To whisper to the storm-tossed bark, ‘Fear not, for it is I’ (John 6:20,Matt.14:27)

His plan for man’s salvation, (Matt.1:21) for repentance (Mark 1:15) and rebirth  (John3:3)

His prophecy, to conquer death and hell; His victory
Has overthrown the grave because He braved His Father’s will (Luke 22:42)

His all-sufficient grace (2Cor.12:9) to help us to trust and obey (Prov.3:5-6)
His Mighty Hand pierced through with nails; by His wounds we are healed  (Isa.53:5)

Thank God For Truth

Tell Me the Old, Old Story

Thank God for faithful fathers
Who steadfastly uphold
The truth that does not falter
From age to age retold

Thank God for faithful mothers
Who teach children to pray
To love God and each other
To trust Him, and obey

Thank God for faithful children
Who love Him in their youth
Seeking firstly, His kingdom
Of righteousness and truth

Thank God for faithful foll’wers
Who do not doubt and stray
But bear truth’s torch so others
May find and know the Way

Thank God for Truth abiding
Divine and absolute
For those, rightly dividing
The word that yields good fruit

© Janet Martin

2 Tim.2:15
Be diligent to present yourself approved to God,
a worker who does not need to be ashamed,
rightly dividing the word of truth.

Two Words Like No Other...

Watching something can often rock us emotionally
rather than devotionally,
but I am praying as I watch The Chosen series,
it renews humble awe, love and devotion to Jesus who loves us so!!

(imagine if, at the cry for help from fisher(s of) men,
we would run to their aid like Zebedee and the other two
 at 6:29-6:30)

Two words test and prove
every feeling, desire, motive and love...
(pondering Peter today...as well as all true disciples)

Two words like no other
Alters consequence
Test’s devotion’s ardor
With obedience

Transcends mortal merit
Rejects worldliness
Guided by the Spirit
Rather than the flesh

Blessing beyond measure
Love’s humility
With a promised treasure
Faith cannot yet see

As, with motive fervent
It counts all but loss
Save to be a servant
Carrying a cross

To give Him the glory
He who with His blood
Wrote redemption's story
 Jesus, Son of God

Two words, kind and tender
Probes utter need where
 Only full surrender
Can His calling bear

…two words like no other
Charge eternity
Pray, how will we answer
Two words;
Follow Me

© Janet Martin

Matt.16:24-26
Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone desires to come after Me,
let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.
25 For whoever desires to save his life will lose it,
but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.
26 For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world,
and loses his own soul?
Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?

Crowning Call

Dawn's glory crowns the earth like
hope's glory crowns our faith...
it rends the darkness!

God, would that we would hear
The call that crowns all calls
Then count no other cause more dear
No matter what befalls

God, would that we would heed
Your still small voice within
And take captive each thought and deed
That leads us into sin

God, would that we would love
You, heart, soul, strength and mind
Committed to what You approve
Through grace and truth combined

God, would that we would claim
Your gift that sets us free
Salvation in no other name
Save Christ of Calvary

And would that we would guard
Against appeals, more sweet
Against what does not seem so hard
When other calls compete

But, with the joy of You
As hope and peace enthralls
Would that we would yield wholly to
The call that crowns all calls

Faithful until faith's glove
From deathless soul will fall
 Forever in the presence of
The final crowning call

© Janet Martin

2 Cor.5:20-21
Therefore we are ambassadors for Christ,
as though God were making His appeal through us.
We implore you on behalf of Christ:
Be reconciled to God.
God made Him who knew no sin to be sinb on our behalf,
so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.

Brutal Truth

Lest we become complacent...
This poem was inspired again in part
by an excerpt from the story of George Mueller...

Proverbs 28:13-17 KJV
He that covereth his sins shall not prosper:
But whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.

Oh, the gravity of its depravity
The enormity of its deformity
The awfulness of its unlawfulness
As it dominates within
The subtleness of its brutal-ness
The evilness of vain promises
Of lies disguised, idolized and prized
This is the truth about sin

The pelf of stubborn selfishness
The stealth of Satan’s deadly steps
The guile of a vile, downward spiral
A wolf dressed in sheep skin
Danger and dire consequence
The liar daring providence
Unholy, rebellious ignorance
Mocker, smooth talker; sin

Hunger and thirst hopelessly cursed
Excuses soothed, me-first immersed
Self-righteous drivel at its worst
Pride’s beguiled, unbridled din
Deception’s uncontested will
Desire never quite fulfilled
Defilement, sensuous and skilled
Beware, oh, beware of sin

Unrepentance unrecognized
Hell’s curb appeal hailed, unapprised
Blind leading blind, applause-imbibed
Deaf to the toll within
Brutal refutal of wisdom astute
Pitiful, poisonous, ravenous root
Half-obedience-corrupted fruit
Horrible horror of sin

© Janet Martin

Romans 5:12-20

Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned— 13(For until the law sin was in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law. 14Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those who had not sinned according to the likeness of the transgression of Adam, who is a type of Him who was to come. 15But the free gift is not like the [e]offense. For if by the one man’s offense many died, much more the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abounded to many. 16And the gift is not like that which came through the one who sinned. For the judgment which came from one offense resulted in condemnation, but the free gift which came from many [f]offenses resulted in justification. 17For if by the one man’s [g]offense death reigned through the one, much more those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.)

18Therefore, as through [h]one man’s offense judgment came to all men, resulting in condemnation, even so through one[i] Man’s righteous act the free gift came to all men, resulting in justification of life. 19For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so also by one Man’s obedience many will be made righteous.

20Moreover the law entered that the offense might abound. But where sin abounded, grace abounded much more, 21so that as sin reigned in death, even so grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

What More Then, Do We Need?

Tis quite a thing to contemplate
The measure of love's price
It's law no one can mediate
To keep, or sacrifice

Where what we sacrifice for Who
Tells who our allegiance is to
What joy when what is sacrificed
Turns loss to gain, when done for Christ
***
He forgives our sins and remembers them no more!
What more do we need?

Isaiah 43:25
I, yes I, am He who blots out your transgressions for My own sake
and remembers your sins no more.

You discern thought’s intents
You look into the heart
Still, morning spills the evidence
Of mercies You impart

You lavish us with love
You keep us in Your care
Your Word, a wondrous treasure trove
Of wealth beyond compare

You hear us when we pray
Your light dispels dark doubt
Your grace sufficient, come what may
Your ways past finding out

You discern thought’s intents
You look into the heart
Still, morning spills the evidence
Of mercies You impart

Your well never runs dry
Where Living Waters roll
Your Bread of Life will satisfy
The hunger of the soul

Your Son died in our stead
One sacrifice for all
To free us from the curse that led
To hell after The Fall

Where blood of bull and ram
Could never pay sin’s price
Jesus, the only spotless Lamb
Fit for the sacrifice

What a gift we receive
You gave the best you had
So, all who repent and believe
May call you Abba-Dad

What more then, do we need
Where greed for gain runs wild
Your goodness is enough to feed
All who become Your child

You lavish us with love
You keep us in Your care
Our hope in You, more than enough
For every cross we bear

Where, when death runs us through
Death is not the last word
But simply the Grand Entrance to
Forever with You, Lord

What more then, can we say
You make our joy complete
As we press on toward That Day
When earth and Heaven meet

Then, how awed we will be
All that we sacrificed
A pittance, as eternity
Consummates, All for Christ

John 1:12
But to all who did receive Him, to those who believed in His name,
He gave the right to become children of God--

Merciful Metamorphosis (or This Cross We Bear)

Without complete surrender we grapple
at times with the goodness of God's higher thoughts and ways!
Oh, may we pray to be like Abraham of old...
Romans 4:19-21,
"And being not weak in faith, he (Abraham) considered not his own body
now dead when he was about a hundred years old,
neither yet the deadness of Sarah's womb.
He staggered not at the promises of God; through unbelief;
but was strong in faith, giving glory to God.

This cross we bear of constant care,
Of disciple-obedience
Of hurt and hope’s heart-hungry prayer
Of conscientious diligence
Of yielding Self’s determined will
And forsaking the world for Christ
To suffer for His sake until
Every idol is sacrificed…

…of walking as children of light
Living the way that Jesus did
(For we are precious in the sight
…of proving what is pleasing to
The One who gave His best for we
Cursed with the blight of Eden’s rue
Who benefit from Calvary

Our cross of care pales when compared
To the cross on Golgotha’s hill
Then pray no suffering is spared
Until love works its miracle
And He who sees the heart beholds
Refinement’s glory taking place
As beneath life’s cross God unfolds
Awestruck awareness of His grace

© Janet Martin

Eph.5:6-11

Let no one deceive you with empty words,
for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience.
7Therefore do not be partakers with them.
8For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord.
Walk as children of light
9(for the fruit of the [b]Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth),
10finding out what is acceptable to the Lord.
11And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness,
but rather [c]expose them.

To Cling, Rather Than Understand

If we relied only on what we understood we would all be atheists!🙏

Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
And lean not on your own understanding;
In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He shall [b]direct your paths.
Do not be wise in your own eyes;
Fear the Lord and depart from evil.

Deuteronomy 13:4
You shall follow the Lord your God and fear Him;
and you shall keep His commandments,
listen to His voice, serve Him, and cling to Him.

Psalm 63:7-8
For You are my help;
I will sing for joy in the shadow of Your wings.
My soul clings to You;
Your right hand upholds me.

Isa.41:10
“Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God;
I will strengthen you, I will help you,
I will uphold you with my righteous right hand”

What waits we cannot tell. Lord, all that we would ask
Is for Your Spirit to compel and fit us for love’s task
To run with hope, no, fly! To rise on eagle’s wings
And bid humility reply while to Thy law hope clings

To find our rightful place within your counsel true
And to commit this day of grace and what it brings, to You
To repent of pride’s sin and yield our will and want
To You, rather than flounder in a world of futile taunt

To trust in You; not lean on sight-impeded ken
But to cling to what is Unseen, forevermore, amen
Then, with pure joy to know the peace Your love imparts
Your right hand on our shoulders and your Word within our hearts

What waits to try and test we do not know or see
But to cling to Your Promises seals our victory
To know, at your right hand are pleasures evermore
To cling, rather than understand, oh Lord, thus we implore
Amen

© Janet Martin

Isa.40:30-31
Even youths grow tired and weary,
and young men stumble and fall.
But those who wait upon the LORD will renew their strength;
they will mount up with wings like eagles;
they will run and not grow weary,
they will walk and not faint.

Psalm 16:11
You will show me the path of life;
In Your presence is fullness of joy;
At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

For Your Name's Sake...

Unlike Queen Esther's husband, the Persian King Ahasuerus (Xerxes I),
who, if any came into his inner court without being summoned,
The Kings of kings beckons all to 'come'
because He came to break death's curse and bring us life
and more abundantly!
His blood-wrought/bought scepter is stretched out to one and all!

What a high call and glorious purpose
is our freedom from slaves to sin/Satan, to servants of Christ!

For Your Name’s sake, help us take up our cross and follow You
And make love’s price of sacrifice an honor, meek and true
Kindle in us, Lord Jesus, faith’s vision, profound and keen
Of ‘substance of things hoped for, evidence of things unseen’

For Your Name’s Sake, Lord Jesus, wake in us the awesome sense
Of beckoning and reckoning; of Choice and Recompense
….and immense Aftermath; of grace or wrath’s eternal sum
(With blood-wrought streams, love’s scepter gleams and beckons all to ‘come’)

For Thy Name’s sake, Lord Jesus, make us more and more like Thee
Not vain, loud, proud, crowd-pleasers but full of humility
Thy pain and loss upon death’s cross our gain; You bore our shame
Forbid we boast save in love’s uttermost; Salvation’s Name

For Your Name’s Sake Lord Jesus, break the will that still resists
Open our eyes to want The Prize that some deny exists
Unclench the fist that clings to mist; with holy hunger wake
The sacred call to give our all for Your precious Name’s sake

Music To God's Ears

James 1:22
But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.

On Sunday mornings our recent messages
have been from the Book of James.
What a wonderful book full of wise counsel!
(And much to prick every conscience if we care about being more than hearers)

We all have in common the mercy that metes each new day...

and though our callings and circumstances vary...

(some days sweeter, cuter and tastier than others)

...we all are loved and will all give accountant to One God and Father of all.

Ephesians 4:6
One God and Father of all, who is above all,
and through all, and in you all.

Not hearers only, Lord
Let the law of Thy Word
Be more than grace and truth outpoured
But leaves the heart unstirred

As we hear, Lord, I pray
We heed Thy Spirit’s woo
So everything we do and say
Will bring glory to You

Where love abounds until
Our Self is crucified
Content to trust Thy Word and will
With nothing else beside

If we ask, you will give
If we seek, we will find
If we knock You will come to live
In faith’s heart, soul and mind

Then hope and joy and peace
Become reality
As word and deed yield love’s increase
Not I, but Christ in Me

What music to God's ears
When His children obey
Then He, Who Is The Word appears
In what we do and say

© Janet Martin

What music to a parents 'ears'/eyes, when we see our children take
loving counsel to heart...
how ever much more our Heavenly Father!

Psalm 100

Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth.
2 Worship the Lord with gladness;
come before him with joyful songs.
3 Know that the Lord is God.
It is he who made us, and we are his[a];
we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.

4 Enter his gates with thanksgiving
and his courts with praise;
give thanks to him and praise his name.
5 For the Lord is good and his love endures forever;
his faithfulness continues through all generations.

Love, or the Lack Thereof...

Clash of wills when expectations don’t see eye to eye
Word that kills, when untamed tongue wounds with spite’s quick reply
Cup that overflows with sorrow when love is not kind
When love does not ‘suffer long’, with Other first in mind

Hunger is a heart-shaped hollow; want unsatisfied
When we cannot seem to swallow self-important pride
When we find no creature comfort in love’s common test
…of so much to learn about love’s good, better and best

Gentle joy and sweet contentment are love’s fruits, my dear
When forgiveness, not resentment keeps the conscience clear
When the welfare of another sets thought’s tender tone
Aware we leave either stumbling block or stepping stone

To love as we ought to, is impossible to do
Without the example of Love’s Author, kind and true
He is slow to anger, rich in mercy, gracious, good
What a way to live; to love each other as we should

God, who gave the Best He had because He loves us so
Does not leave as helpless, hopeless; by His grace we go
As His love pours through us it transforms wrong attitude
Until all that remains is love's law of gratitude

© Janet Martin

Psalm 145:8-9
The LORD is gracious and compassionate,
slow to anger and abounding in loving devotion.
9The LORD is good to all;
His compassion rests on all He has made.

Awed Altar-call

Countless crowds throng beaches the world over,
where front-row, no-charge seating to the greatest show on earth,
draws young and old to behold the heaven's declaring the glory of God..

Psalm 19:1-4
The heavens declare the glory of God;
the skies proclaim the work of His hands.
2Day after day they pour forth speech;
night after night they reveal knowledge.
3Without speech or language,
without a sound to be heard,a
4their voiceb has gone out into all the earth,
their words to the ends of the world.c

For what may be known about God is plain to them,
because God has made it plain to them.
For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities,
His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen,
being understood from His workmanship,
so that men are without excuse.

...hopefully an awesome awareness of  'No Excuse'
kindles in our hearts and souls a kind of altar-call
to recommit our wants and ways to the Creator of the world
and everything/everyone in it!
In His Word we find everything we need

Come, Holy Spirit kindle, through the power of Thy Word
A fire of desire to labour for Thee, O Lord
For Thou art near and dearly with each soul who seeks Thy will
Who strives with earnest diligence faith’s calling to fulfill

Lord, let our love for Thee and not the world, consume this clay
In sky and land and sea since the creation of the world

…so that all are without excuse; the universal tongue
Of the heavens declares thy glory to both old and young
Day after day, night after night without language or speech
To the ends of the earth, not one escapes the heavens reach

Our Father who art in heaven, Thy kind goodness grants
Sufficient grace to help us face and bear the circumstance

Lord, wake in us an earnest ache Thy glory to behold
Let Thy cause be the constant sake that draws and fills faith’s mold
