November Dusk Aria

Whiling the While till the supper crew comes home...

Something soft and gentle as November's early twilight mantle falls...

When dusk is like a painting on a pedestal of air
When earth is reacquainting sod and sea with dimming flare
When blush-blue velvet duvet shrouds the shoulders of spent day
It seems a fitting homage to bow our heads and pray

For never-failing grandeur from a Hand we cannot see
He tucks November’s contours beneath twilight’s canopy
And deepens with  sky-mantle, the ebbing landscape until
Earth is snuffed like a candle on an autumn window-sill

For articulate tugging on ties no one can define
As dark of night is hugging dusk’s westward horizon-line
For sense of Gentle Presence staying just beyond our gaze
Stirring in souls an essence when interpreted, is praise

It seems fitting to thank Him as history claims its due
In autumn-twilight anthem, for His never-changing view
O'er nation against nation, He ushers in evening
Fans feathers of compassion, tucks the world beneath His wing

Sheer Perfection

The sun as it set seemed to cast the ice-coated trees in coral glaze...
Stunning!

Oh, that lovely, lonely feeling of the twilight slowly stealing
From earth’s coral-coloured ceiling to its shadow-stippled text
Oh, the beauty of the ages when the weight of whispers wages
Wars with nature’s seasoned pages moving from one to the next

Oh, the tender, somber splendor as today’s constant contender
Fills far, endless deeps with grandeur too divine for pen to spell
Where the Lender stuns the spender of the moments that meander
From the height of ‘love-me-tender’ to the depths of ‘fare-thee-well’

Oh the sweet and soulful yearning as the toll of no returning
Keens the whole of love and learning with a hymn of dimming day
Waking a surge of emotion like the breaking of the ocean
Waves on rock-juts of devotion tested by a westward sway

Oh the blushing, rushing wonder roused by silence that can thunder
As Intention’s Pirates plunder ships lost on a dusk-tossed sea
Where gentle ripples of laughter from a firmament-al rafter
Fills the ever-ever-after with a perfect memory

Last night and tonight's dusk called for a poem-serenade...
Tonight I was out on my skis waiting  with bold expectation
for more of what last night treated us with
but a broad band of brumal cloud
snuffed the sun
just as it began to
stun!
...it was still pretty, just not pink!

Autumn Late-day Rain-rhapsody

October's exit is wild and windy!!!
Hold on to your hat!

Wrote this poem while cooking supper as I watched eventide roll/blow in!

Cornstalk-candelabras etched
on backdrops of grey crepe
Maple-leaf mosaics pressed
into fall’s grand escape
Rush of silver runnels hiss
beneath wheels homeward bound
Wind wears holes through woodland’s
whispers falling to the ground

Autumn's petal-pandemonium
 holds strange allure
Suddenly we want to join them
on their farewell tour
Early dark is seeping in like
high-tide, splash by splash
Freeways sparkle like
a gold and ruby rhinestone sash

Simple supper smells like
something special (and it is)
Happiness simmers in pots
and pan-fried promises
Home, however humble feels
imperfectly complete
Meek prayers burst with pity
for the pauper on the street

Oft, how oft our eyes are drawn
to what is fading fast
Like first light that births each dawn
begins to shape the past
Like the melody that drips
from seas without a shore
Like the sting of salty stars
that slip and are no more

(I could not post a what's-for-supper blog last Thursday due to helping at a funeral all day)

This Thursday-what's-for-supper post is one of those non-recipe meals...
brown your beef, add your pick of veggies
(tonight's veggies, green peppers, parsley, garlic, red and white onion)
cook till veggies are almost tender then add tomato-sauce. (I use the one I linked to)
Heat till bubbly then serve on steamed thinly sliced cabbage instead of spaghetti! yummy.

Autumn Supper Hour (or ten minutes ;-)

It takes a  lot longer to make a meal appear than disappear, huh?!!

I would like to start a what's-for-supper weekly post.
and the plan was to do it last night but that didn't work out
so here it is, the morning after...

I got a Pampered Chef pizza stone recently and finally had a chance to try it out! YUM!!
(google a pizza dough recipe that works into your time-frame)
Also, had to settle for cheddar cheese instead of mozzerella because I didn't have any on hand.
(Pizza is one of the most versatile foods I can think of!)
With the leftover pizza dough I made a few cheese rolls so we had the option of rolls or pizza with bean soup I prepared earlier in the day after cooking a ham bone the day before.
Skim fat then to the broth I added in proportion to pot and broth-batch-size,
a lot of thinly sliced onions, thinly sliced cabbage, some chopped celery,
precooked black beans and navy beans, a handful of chopped parsley,
a hefty pinch of black pepper and some bay leaves...
(for extra flavour I added a few envelopes of onion soup mix as well.)
I would love to know what extra seasonings would work
with this combination so that I can keep it 'pure'!
(I added no salt because ham broth and soup mix is salty)
Add water, in proportion to batch size for desired flavour and consistency.

The delight of the supper crowd, (aka Matt and Victoria) was SO worth the effort!
Made supper feel like a simple celebration for a work day completed...well almost.
(there's always the cleanup after.)

this is what yesterday's day-end felt like...

The rush of rain has eased; the trees bedazzled with its gems
Blue and gray weave a brooding blanket tossed across the day
The colours of October flare and dim on wooden stems
As twilight layers deepen and fold outdoor worlds away

Suppertime, like a simple celebration, warms and cheers
The lights of home beckon and draw our weary loved ones back
The Thing that turns us older as it spins laughter and tears
Is sweeter round a table where dusk trails night’s veil of black

…and makes us count the simple blessings that haste overlooks
It wakes a wordless hymn where time is both tender and brusque
And stirs an ache for pages sealed in fond echo-bound books
Yet makes us more aware of what slips through us dusk by dusk

The day is gathered in; darkness harvests earth's gold and red
We bow our heads in gratitude where swift the seasons roll
Thankful that Time slows down a bit in bowls of soup with bread
As supper’s simple celebration warms body and soul

After watching some pizza-dough-tossing videos I decided I'd like to learn to toss it like a pro!
Ha-ha! practice is required if you don't want to look like a snowman!

Here is one video to teach the art of tossing a pizza crust
(note; some say never use a rolling pin to roll out the crust but rather just press with your hands)
I've tried both ways and the pizza disappears regardless! 😉

Sentimental...or Autumn After Dark

Melancholy murmur moves
through woodland’s waning roof
Wind, now wild and overbearing,
now a child, aloof
Summer, sweet, sweet summer,
like a flower-filled mirage
Flickers in the rustle
of fall’s colorful collage

An essence broods, torn between
 the pleasure and the price
Seeking affirmation but
receiving sage advice
Earth is like a festival
 decked in nature’s pizazz
Autumn yards and boulevards
like bars of bluesy jazz

And all of it together chills
and thrills me to the bone
Like listening to Kenny
on an alto saxophone
I’ll take the ache of farewell
for the sake of hello
Break my heart but linger longer, love,
before you go

Leave me, oh, but leave me wiser
than the morn we met
Grant me the memento
of a day I can’t forget
Let me blush beneath the kiss
you brush upon my brow
Let me be the girl that some think
Time un-twirled somehow

River is a ribbon
of metallic ebony
Carries little leaf-boat
to uncharted destiny
Rain-song stipples puddles,
strums the merlot maple arc
Composing a melody
of autumn after dark
