But By The Grace of God (til death doth part)

Not counting all the times, we didn’t see quite eye to eye
When your druthers and mine were like December meets July
When opposites that once seemed so attractive start to irk
As we reevaluate what it takes to make ‘us’ work

Not counting all the days when love's 'tone' was misunderstood
And we did not respond in ways like two grown adults should
When we behaved like rivals rather than husband and wife
I’d say we are exceptional at rocking married life

Not counting all the rules that unschooled mid-life love ignores
Until our tempers cool, no longer fooled by lion-roars/'winning' scores
I’d say in spite of all the times we bite instead of kiss
That you and I are prime examples of sweet, wedded bliss

I hope that life becomes a 'losing track of years' because
Of moment-thrum's momentous sums; the love-story of 'us'
Where, in spite of those times we blush some sad excuse to fend
We'll look back on a life of 'us'; love, faithful to the end

To Hubby For Putting Up With A Poet-Wife

PAD Challenge day 11: For today’s prompt, write a dedication poem.

I guess that I deserve the smirks, side-jokes, eye-rolls and such
They tell the unflattering truth without adjective’s touch
Since those green years of youth and all the ups and downs we’ve had
Quite unaware, I groomed the quirks that sometimes drive you mad
But even if I could I wouldn’t like it very much
To never need to find a rhyming word that ends in ‘uch’

The way I am is due, in part to features God-designed
The rest, I guess is creature-strength and weakness intertwined
And all the idiosyncrasies that make this poet thus
Are not exactly matters with much merit to discuss
So all I ask is for us to be more patient and kind
A person fifty-plus is hard to re-invent, I find

I love the way you say you love the way I, ‘my-oh-my!’
You put up with my craned-neck-stares at what you call The Sky
And even when you mutter ‘oh, no not again’, I know
You wouldn’t really change me (at least I tell myself so)
So, thank-you Hubby, you deserve a medal a mile high
For putting up with….oh, wow, look! A cloud, a tree, a…sigh

You say a four-line poem is a perfect work of art
But you have never held a poem-ocean in your heart
Or borne the dash of ether breakers crashing deep within
Or felt the whisper of an almost-poem brush your skin
So I will dedicate this poem to you, every part
And ask your kind indulgence from the bottom of my heart

Humbly Thankful (a love poem)

Hubby's 'Happy 54th Birthday' today!
Happy Birthday Jim!
...and because I know you prefer short, SHORT poems,
here is a short one for you...

For all the miles you've 'run'
For all the shoveled 'poo'
This is a great big "thank-you hon"
And a great big "I love you"
(for all the times I didn't say thank-you)

Thank-you for the millions of miles you've driven (and scooped)
to keep a roof over our heads, food on the table and shoes on our feet!

Here's another short-ish poem for us...

We celebrate our 30th anniversary on Sunday
so in case I'm not back til next week this poem is a little tribute to thirty years of us!

Life sometimes leaves us wishing for things we could use more of
But I am humbly thankful for more-than-I-deserve love
Where just-between-the-two-of-us would leave many a lapse
But by kind love and help from God He fills in all the gaps
As through the ups and downs of love and life and try, try, try
The older that we get the more love seems to satisfy
Then come what may from day to day, one thing we know is sure
God’s love entwined with yours and mine makes our love secure

I could spice up this poem hon, with words like ‘sweetie-pie’
But you know me too well so I’ll just wink, (and you know why)

Touch Me...a Love in Marriage Poem

Touch me
Touch me with your eyes
The gap twixt you and I
Trembles with the fullness
Of love’s hard truths realized
Experience; years in learning
Kindles a keener spark
For love is more than reckless
Stolen kisses in the dark

Touch me
Touch me with your thought
Past warmth of pulsing skin
To the person, not of flesh
That I am from within
For time, a patient teacher
Wields love’s refining tool
And we are willing students
Testing, breaking every rule

Touch me
Oh, touch me with your hands
There is no restriction
No restraint or reprimand
In love’s pure invitation
Of passion’s purposed honor
Reserved implicitly
For one unto the other
Shared only twixt me and thee

Touch me
Darling, touch me with your lips
And whisper word for word
The hunger in your finger-tips
And longing’s oceans stirred
Then kiss me, kiss me slowly
Where inhibitions hide
Kiss away the willfulness
Protecting foolish pride

Touch me
Touch me with your loving smile
The kind that understands
The beauty of love’s chapters
Etched into enduring hands
Committed to its promise
That joined us heart to heart
'to love each other faithfully
until death do us part'

He and I

You drink Red Bull
I love coffee or tea
You watch Sport’s Center
I read poetry
You tell me a joke
And laugh til you cry
And all I can muster
Is ‘oh my’
I gasp at the sunset
You say, it's like many before
You wink at a nice ****
And I kick yours;)
I love to run
You prefer sitting
You like playing golf
I prefer knitting (and I hate knitting)
You love people and crowds
I, a tree-lined nook
You turn the TV up loud
I grab a book
You love to talk
I’m kind of an introvert
I start clearing the table
You ask, where’s dessert?
You drive your Peterbilt, shift those gears
All over the continent; I haven’t traveled in years
You thought I'd never change
And I thought you would
But at the end of the day
Things are still pretty good
Because when we turn on the stereo
Oh, baby, you and I both know
We love the same music, you and me
Oh, we’ve got a good thing going, don’t we?
Alan Jackson, George Strait, Josh Turner, George Jones
Tim McGraw, Celine Dion, Don Williams, Brooks and Dunn
Jim Reeves, Charlie Pride and Alison Krauss
Merle Haggard, and Porter, Conway, Mel Tillis
Daniel ‘O Donnell and Lady Antebellum
Rascal Flatts, Michael Johnson, Marty Stuart, Dwight Yoakum
Dean Brody, George Canyon, Paul Brandt, and much more
Let’s close the windows and lock the door
Turn up the music hon, it’s just you and me
We’ve got a good thing going, don’t we?

Janet Martin

Yes, this is the humorous truth about 'he and I'.
But one thing we enjoy together is music.

What spawned this poem after 23 years of marriage?
He called this morning to tell me a joke, and while he was
wheezing with laughter I was waiting for the punch-line
then realized there was no more...he had said it!

Holding You.......

I prayed for you today, my dear
For in my prayer God brings you near
Though days and miles are in between
To God the distance is unseen
And so when I am missing you
There is one thing that I can do
I ask God to keep you in His care
For I can touch you in a prayer
