After the Girl

After the laughter and clinking of spoons
After the stirring and sipping of tea
After a slow-steeped love-spun afternoon
We keep a beautiful memory

After the whirl, skip-and-twirl, little girl
After carefree fairy-tale fantasies
After they pass through that door to a world
Of almost-a-woman, what fond memories

© Janet Martin

I had the pleasure of serving tea at another Disney princess party
Present were Minnie Mouse, Alice in wonderland, Belle and Tinkerbell
When I asked them how long they plan on doing this they said. oh, for a l-o-o-o-g time, until we're married and everything':)

I wonder how long it will be until they taste the hurt that Emily of New moon described like this 'Outgrowing the things we love is never a pleasant process'
I wish for them a bit of Disney-princess as long as they live!

Chrysalis...or Fourteen

Poised on joys of girlhood
She chatters, dream-wild
Within struggles a stranger
Half woman, half child

Dancing on a threshold
Caught between two worlds
Torn twixt morrow’s mating call
And yesterday’s girl

Trying to become Her
She which waits to be
Chrysalis of innocence
Holds maturity

Laughing, singing, fretting
Somewhere in between
Woman’s world and childhood
Ah, this is fourteen

© Janet Martin

She chatters non-stop, all the way home, detailing the events of a week-end away...

I listen,
caught between her words
and her voice,
having been taught
through experience
that butterflies
fly
away...

Beautiful You...to 'Girls' of all Ages

You are beautiful
Though media flaunts
Material stuff
God made you precious
His own through and through
And you are the only
Beautiful you

How quickly we finger
Our failures and flaws
But we ought to smile
And be thankful because
Beauty is not
Our shape or our skin
Beauty is something
That flows from within

Love is a beauty
That none can pretend
So let’s love each other
Girl, woman, friend
For then the mirror
We may glance into
Will reflect the image
Of a beautiful you

The Truth about Women (an edited re-post)

We were watching
When suddenly I saw her
In my peripheral view
Watching the movie
Twixt chatter and knitting
Suddenly it hit me
She is growing up too

For one wink a girl
Then forever a woman
I study her profile
Her nose, her chin
Somewhere between breakfast
And warm hugs at bedtime
I tenderly wonder
When did ‘she’ begin?

She turns to look at me
The woman inside her
Is restless and eagerly
Waiting to bloom
She does not know
Of the urge rushing through me
To hold back the moments
The hours consume

Inside every girl
Is the bud of a woman
Time will unfold
Its intent willingly
Inside every woman
In spite of the ages
Is part of the girl
That she used to be

Come Morning Light

The night is empty
Save for the swoon
Of shadow and silver
Beneath the full moon

I should be dreaming
Tucked warm in my bed
But I choose the high noon
Of midnight instead

Fantasy swirls
Like the steam from my cup
Women become girls
When the moon is up

Infinitely gentle
The hands of the night
And I’ll be a woman
Come morning light

The Truth about Women

Poetics Aside Prompt: Take the phrase “The Truth About (blank),” replace the blank with a new word or phrase, make the new phrase the title of your poem, and then, write the poem.
This movie is a family favorite at our house...

We were supposed to be watching
Shop around the Corner
But suddenly I saw her
In my peripheral view
As she watched the movie
Twixt chatter and knitting
Suddenly it hit me
She is growing up too

For one wink a girl
Then forever a woman
I study her profile
Her nose, her chin
Somewhere between breakfast
And warm hugs at bedtime
Suddenly I wonder
When did it begin?

The woman inside her
Is restless and eagerly
Waiting to bloom
She does not know
Of the urge rushing through me
To hold back the moments
The hours consume

Inside every woman

Is part of the girl

The Person I Used to Be

I am not the shape of my body
Or the color of my skin
These are merely landmarks
Of the person I am
Within

Once upon a distant time
I was a girl of many dreams
But somewhere in life’s forward march
They got lost,
It seems

Too many passions folded
Then surrendered to Time’s greed
The future does not give us
What we want, but what we
Need

Sometimes, in perfect moments
As the evening slips away
In gold-vermilion vesture; I become
For blissful half-breaths the girl of
Yesterday

Don’t misunderstand; I’m not ungrateful
But being a woman is bitter-sweet
Girlish freedom is a pasture
Beneath lost day-dreams and
Bare feet

I’ve traded luring day-dreams
For a better mystery
Of motherhood and the adrenaline rush
Of what is yet
To be

Forever Hope

Tonight we had the closing Mother-daughter night for this season of Gem's.
It was a fabulous evening with a Roman/Greek era theme spawning from thoughts of the Olympics and how in life we also need to never quit trying and to give it our best.Their motto this year ....Get wisdom; go beyond the gold.... The MC for the evening did a spectacular job and it brought tears to my eyes as she encouraged a room FULL of girls (and moms) to keep their eyes on Jesus, because life tries to throw in all kinds of distractions. She encouraged them, that in spite of what life may bring to remember who they are! ...who we all are because of grace!

There will be obstacles
And distractions
Disappointment
And infractions
There will be days
Of carelessness
Of shocking failure
And more shocking…success
There will be neglect
Busyness, despair
There will be worry
Where there ought to be prayer
There will be apathy
Where there should be concern
…yet, there will be patience
We have so much to learn
And there will be One
Who will never replace
With lesser hope
His amazing grace
And there will reside
Though often we fail
A steadfast Guide
Within the vale
And there will be forever
Forgiveness of sin
In a blood-red river
That cleanses within
Yes, there will be enemies
To lure us from His Word
Yet, through it all there will be
Jesus Christ, the Lord
Our Alpha, our Omega
Our beginning and end
Our precious Savior
Everlasting Friend

Song: What a Friend we Have in Jesus
She read this verse among others:

Trust in the LORD with all your heart
   and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways submit to him,
and he will make your paths straight. Prov.3:5-6

Where Are You?

As the daylight settles in a crimson bed
And the sun is replaced by the moon overhead
As the azure deepens to indigo blue
I can’t help but wonder; where are you?
Soft twilight ever the loyal paramour
Her love; a soundless troubadour
Sweet are the arms of dusky true-blue
As I silently wonder; where are you?

A bloom cannot return to sleep in the bud
I am not a child with my bare feet in the mud
I splashed through the brook of my youth yesterday
But the magic of childhood has slipped away
The willow weeps its tears upon the grass
In a hushed carpet of years that silently pass
As I pause on this memory-strewn avenue
I can’t help but wonder; where are you?

There’s a hint of tropical bliss in the breezes that blow
Across the solitude of my midnight paramo
Drawn by the blue tenderness of your empathetic glance
Without hesitation I surrender to the dance
‘Round and round, two shadows on a moonlit plateau
The girl I used to be and the woman I know
Linger together on the field of sunless dew…….
Suddenly we feel a chill and we wonder; where are you?

Little Girls.....

Braids are bouncing as they race
To their favorite hiding place
Down the dusty lane they run
Hand in hand beneath the sun
Isn’t it a glorious world?
It’s great to be a little girl

Butterflies and fantasy
Flip-flop feet so fancy-free
Living happy carefree hours
In a world of smiles and flowers
Pure and priceless, precious pearls
In the form of little girls

Sunbeams dancing on their way
Laughter trickling as they play
Endless chatter, boundless dreams
Where the winsome fairy gleams
What a sad and dreary world
Were it not for little girls
