For Love's Sake

Love does not sprout up like a tree
To weep beside a river
And if it bids farewell to thee
It cannot be forever

Love is sweeter than the flower
That graces one small season
It wraps its arms around an hour
Without a word or reason

Love reaches far across the miles
Distance is agony
But still love touches me with smiles
Drawing you close to me

Though it may twist and tear the heart
We cannot live without it
We crave its kind and cruel smart
We believe it and we doubt it

For love’s sake we hurt and weep
It's tug we cannot sever
But love is stronger than a tree
For no tree lives forever
